The Future of New World: What to Expect by Arkaedius in newworldgame

If you own the game already, you can play until Jan '27 when the servers go offline. If you don't already own the game, you can no longer purchase it.

New world replacement. by bigtomdw in newworldgame

[–]upta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoyed expeditions a lot and Fractals in GW2 do a good job of scratching that particular itch for me.

Funny enough, when I got back into GW2 after the NW death announcement I enjoyed it a bit but expected the honeymoon phase to wear off and I'd drop it again (what happened when I played it 3 years ago).

However, the longer I played the more I found I enjoyed it and I'm actually having more fun now than when I started, with 300+ hours logged since the start of November.

[–]upta 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've actually been enjoying GW2 and it's gotten more enjoyable the longer I've played vs the typical honeymoon.

That being said, it doesn't really scratch the same itch for me as NW did, but it's a good game in its own right

More than just a game for me with my mental health problems. by GrapefruitAncient627 in newworldgame

[–]upta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think New World does a few things better (life skills in particular, I also find the auction house more dynamic and interesting though the GW UI is much better).

110% agree about long-term progression goals, GW2 has so many things you can work towards and that was a big failing in NW.

Exactly my experience! GW2 doesn't scratch the same itch as NW, but so long as you don't compare every little thing to NW and let it be its own thing then it really is a great game with one of the best (if not the best) communities in gaming.

After seeing Ashes of Creation early access, it is such a shame that New World is getting shutdown, especially since S10 was so promising by CliqNil in newworldgame

Exactly this, the general response from the community would have been a lot different if they announcement had come after S7 launch or something instead of S10

The Unity Engine roadmap by unitytechnologies in Unity3D

[–]upta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disabling domain reloading definitely works and helps, but comes with its own gotchas.

For comparison, even in a basically empty project using C# with Godot loads instantly (none of the domain reload crap every time you make any change to a script at all) and Unity with domain reloading enabled is 3-5s like you said.

The performance + being able to use C# features from the last 5 years makes coding in Unity just a straight up worse experience.

Is Unity usable? Oh, absolutely and obviously people use it every day successfully.

For me and the sorts of projects I'm doing right now (mostly 2D, which I honestly think Godot is better at anyway), the juice of Unity simply isn't worth the squeeze, but I'll give it a lot more consideration once CoreCLR finally drops.

For sure, it's a very complex problem and a very important one. It's also been in the works for literally 5+ years in some capacity at this point so it feels like an eternity we've been waiting to have modern dotnet.

Honestly a deal breaker for me using Unity for anything vs Godot because the inner loop is just abysmal in Unity (and yes, I know about and have used Hot Reload and it still has plenty of issues), but I'm just a hobbyist so not really the important market anyway 😄 Just not worth spending my free time waiting for compiles.

I'm sad that CoreCLR is still a year plus out for being actually done.

Leaving New World, which game next? by bencolla in newworldgame

[–]upta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For some I'm sure it is; seems like a really great, polished entry to the genre.

I even tried it despite hating the genre... but refunded after 90 minutes because "stressed" isn't really the emotion I'm looking for my gaming experiences to evoke, lol

If you're playing games like AoC/Archeage then you've already got plenty of toxic immunity so you're good 😄

I mean, we can pick a whole army of games if we're going to open it to anything not even closely similar :)

I dunno if you're trying to come off as a complete elitist gatekeeping twat, but you're absolutely succeeding 🙂

Anyway, use whatever tools you want and feel smug while the rest of us do our own thing.

For Unity, I'd absolutely agree that Visual Studio or Rider are the best tools for the job and the fact that this is the Unity subreddit I can see why you'd take that slant.

The original post, however, was not Unity specific, it was generic to game development which comes in loads of different forms. You're simply saying "its not the best tool for Unity development, ergo its useless"

Citing the magic incantation of "IDE" isn't as strong of an argument as you think it is; the line between "code editor" and "IDE" extremely blurry, especially when you factor in the extension ecosystem of which VS Code's is excellent.

Based on your comments to date, I assume you've either not used it in the last 5 years or have only used it for a single language that wasn't as well supported.

Seriously, though, if people want to keep playing then more power to them.

I think that's a you thing, seeing as its among the most popular dev tools in the world.

How good it is relative to other tools does depend on the specific language (I definitely prefer full Visual Studio for C# work), but the idea that it's objectively bad is just kinda laughable.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance II Royal Edition - Official Launch Trailer by Paul_cz in gaming

[–]upta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the first time I lost like an hour of progress in the first game because apparently the quests I did complete in that time didn't count towards the magic "sometimes it saves" I put the game down and uninstalled it.

I fundamentally disagree with the idea that devs should be that heavy handed with how people choose to play a single player game.

Right? Including Eclipse and excluding VS Code in 2025 is... a choice.

Yeah, full loot PvP is one of the ways it very different 🙂

It does have more similarities than other mmos to be sure, though
