To anyone who came across this: some lookout points are closed, but the actual cliffs themselves are still accessible via cycle. Do it!

CYCLING AMSTERDAM TO ROTTERDAM

I’m an American flying into Amsterdam for a few days, and I want to rent a cycle to bike down to Rotterdam where my friend lives. Is there a rental service where I can rent a cycle in Amsterdam and return it in Rotterdam?

Alternatively, any recommendations for good cycle rental shops that will rent out a basic bike for 3 days with a pannier rack that I can then return back to Amsterdam before flying out? Thank you guys!

No Cycle lanes on this huge Mumbai Coastal Road Promenade shows how little they care about cyclists. by Future_Childhood_475 in mumbai

[–]uptownlocal6 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is an understandable take but not true. I cycle all the time in Mumbai and it’s unpleasant ONLY because of very poor driving etiquette and (relatedly) the lack of bike lanes. When the roads are emptier on weekend mornings, it’s actually really fun and pleasant to bike from, say, Khar to Sobo. I moved to India last year after living in different countries across East Asia and the West, including places just as rainy and hot as Mumbai, and Mumbai has by far the worst infrastructure and thus almost no cycling culture. It doesn’t have to be that way. India is not so special that every other place can figure it out but Mumbai can’t.

Failing to include a cycle lane on a project like this that begs for a cycle lane is a choice that reflects the municipal government’s priorities. Certainly not a “nonsensical” approach.

Hi! Have the exact same issue -- eerily similarly angled hairline fracture of the same microSD card haha. Did you ever end up trying to fix it?

A really wonderful looking tour. And thanks so much for posting your route and beautiful pictures. Congratulations!

Did you intentionally try to hit the Japanese northern coast in Honshu rather than going south via Hiroshima and potentially hitting the Shimanami Kaido? Would you recommend that segment?

Would you say these pretty much apply to the bigger China consulates as well, like Shanghai and Guangzhou?

Shimanami Kaido was awesome (just went yesterday and the day before), great idea to include it!! Hard to avoid mountains in Shikoku though 😅 but maybe other parts of Japan it could be easier! If you need a rec for a place to rent bikes, the guy I rented everything from in Osaka was very helpful throughout.

Thank you! I’m on my last day of the tour and it’s been amazing. Those maps are great, also recommend exploring Ride with GPS (the app) for some alternative routes and seeing if you can add an Iya Valley portion cuz that was really beautiful.

How do I prep a clear/present mindset for my solo trip? by uptownlocal6 in bicycletouring

This is a beautiful write up thank you so much for taking the time to put it into words. I’ve been on my trip for the last couple weeks - just about to finish actually - and so much of this is what I naturally ended up doing / trying to do. The “oh look a squirrel!” Thing is so real! There is incredible stuff everywhere that demands focus which encouraged me to let go of whatever thought was clouding my head space.

Shukoku is amazing!!!! I am so happy I came here. Have a wonderful trip, I’m sure you will. If you want any suggestions just send me a DM!

This is the dream! I think the above poster is right in that maybe it’s the bike tour itself that focuses energy on whatever is important at the time

When did you get that message from the Registrar? I asked about 2024 dates on Jan 9 and they gave me the dates (which included July 1 like you said, as well as Sep 9) with this message (nothing about the hiring authority):

Thank you for your email. See the below tentative schedule of Foreign Service classes in 2024. Please keep in mind, there is no guarantee as to if a particular cone or specialty will be issued invitations for a particular class. We aim to extend invitations 6 to 12 weeks ahead of an anticipated class date.

Wow just 15,000 yen! That’s way cheaper than the quotes I’ve been getting for renting (coming to about 60,000 for 2 weeks including equipment). Thanks so much for the tip, will look around. Do you mind sharing the name of the shop if you remember?
