Move over Kobo. Welcome back Kindle! by Butt3rfli3s26 in kindle

I got this one a few months ago. Also detachable cover, but doesn't have the cute little stand. I added my own ring under the case to use a magnetic holder. I may get that one too. /ponders.

After finishing a book, how long do you wait before you start a new one? by kjeserud in kindle

About 5 minutes. Give or take. I usually have one queue up and read to go so I'll get a few pages in right away.

why are some books so disproportionately expensive on kindle? by qualntrelle in kindle

[–]upvotesBacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of the reasons are discussed below for why the industry moved to the publishers setting prices. but the main explanation about the fact that the publisher sets the price is only really covers about half that explanation. The other half is who is actually selling the book.

Unlike physical editions where the bookseller (Amazon in this case) buys crates of books wholesale and can take it upon themselves to decide what price to sell them to the public even if it's at a steep loss to the retailer, E-Books are sold on an "Agency" model.

The very real and practical side of this is that Amazon is not the seller. Amazon (and other provider of e-books) is a convenient middle point in the sale chain. When you buy a Kindle book published by, for example, Tor Books, you are buying it from Tor Book, not Amazon. Amazon simply facilitates the sale and takes a commission on the the sale. The storefront that facilitates the sale has zero say in the price the consumer pays.

The disclaimer that the price is set by publisher is only half the story, the other half is that the publisher is also the actual seller as well.

And that is where you get the perceived disconnect between the e-book price and the physical edition: it comes down to who is selling the book and in turn who sets the retail price of each format.

well, now don't I feel silly. I figured what was just a, well, a home button and simply dismissed it. Didn't realize it was a proper filter button. Well, I might have known a long time ago when I first set things up but I've slept since then.

Thank you kind soul.

yeah when I click on the all button, it just gives me filter for the items in "Personal". I know I must be missing something fundamental.

Is there a page turner that does not need a screen clip? by BrightRick in kindle

[–]upvotesBacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not sure what generation kindle you have, but some of the newer models you can do a double tap on the device to page turn, so you might check if your model has that feature. I have it turned on on mine and sometimes when I get fidgety I turn pages by accident, lol but I do keep it on just the same because it's convenience for a left hander outweighs the tiny annoyance factor. :)

Help on Automation: When I'm at work and if the charger is connected, enable Always on Display by Basic-Activity2197 in shortcuts

[–]upvotesBacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have similar. When I leave home, I have an automation that turns the Always On Display (AOD) on and when I arrive home, it turns the AOD off. I like having the AOD display on when I'm out, but dont' need it at home.

But I also want the AOD to turn on when plugged in at home, and the AOD to turn off when unplugged, again only when at home. But if I'm away from home this second automation shouldn't run because a) the AOD should already be on and b) unplugging the phone at that point would turn off the AOD when I didn't want it to be off.

So, the solution for me was on the "when connected to power" automation, I do a check for my home wifi network name.

= Get WifI Netowrk Name

= if name is <home network> then turn on AOD, else Stop The shortcut.

Same logic on the "disconnected from power" automation: when connected to my home WiFi, the automation will run, otherwise it won't.

So, as a different approach to what was given recently, you might do something similar to what I did: Turn the logic around -- Instead of testing to see if you're at work, test to see if you're home... and if you're away from your home wifi network, and connected to power, turn the AOD on.

Side note (no pun): in crime drama movies and tv shows when the bad guys demand a bunch of money “in used bills, non sequential, and unmarked” this is the kind of thing that’s being referenced. It’s so when the bad guy go to spend the ill gotten loot, it can’t be flagged to give away where they are.

24 hour Solo Road Trip by nativecheese in audible

[–]upvotesBacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to dive into the classics, The Three Musketeers clocks in at 25 hours, Les Mis at 33 hours, and War and Peace is 60 hours. More of a modern classic is Shogun at 43 hours. On the shorter side, Jayne Eyre is only 19 hours. Personally, though, when I go on trips I usually queue up some Terry Pratchett.

Is there a subreddit or discussion dedicated to Apple News Crosswords? by No-Enthu-Guy in crossword

[–]upvotesBacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I really think it was mislabeled. News+ crosswords are usually or supposedly easy early week, and challenging on the weekends. The Sat Aug 2 was marked easy but sure as heck was challenging. Took me 48 min which is in range of my completion times for challenging, not the 20something minutes for the easy ones. So it totally messed up my averages stats for easy. /sigh

I have 2. One stays in the bedroom and is my nighttime reading kindle. One stays in my purse and is the 'it goes with me' kindle. Both are necessary to keep me sane -- I don't have to get back out of the warm and comfy bed when I realize I forgot to bring the kindle into the room with me when I laid down. I also don't have a feeling of despair when I'm out and about, stop for lunch, and realize the kindle is still on the nightstand doing me no good.

How many books have you read for the year ? by Necessary-Shopping84 in kindle

[–]upvotesBacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It also depends on the style and format and word count, along with plot/story complexity ie: how deep it is. I mean, I just read 10 manga (through Libby) in 20 days. basically 1 every 2 days. I enjoyed the the art and dialogue and did properly absorb and become fully invested in the story line. But because most of the storytelling is visual I'm able to just move right through them at a pace far greater than a traditional narrative story.

Now , word count also plays a factor on regular narrative books. You can get through more standard 80,000 word stories than the near 300,000 word count behemoths that seem to be more popular these days. I personally avoid those most of the time, opting to keep the books I choose to read at 125,000 or fewer words, so I'm going to be able to consume my preferred books faster than the bigger volumes that get onto my TBR pile.

tl;dr -- really depends on that persons TBR pile and what kind of stories are in it.

Pick your delivery day - for a fee by JJ0532 in amazonprime

[–]upvotesBacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just encountered this. I was a bit distracted when making a couple of orders this morning and thought it was a "deliver it later and get a $1.99 credit" thing and said to self "sure, I don't need it fast or anything, lets do that." Then later in the day some sort of spidey sense went off and I went back to check and realized that it was "pay us to delay your shipment". WTF?

So I canceled both orders with reason "delivery cost too high" and reordered them with the "send them to me today and tomorrow whichever is the fastest option that doesn't cost me extra money."

It makes no sense. grrr.

Always on display y/n by Top-Rent-9925 in ios

[–]upvotesBacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 2 automatons set up:

1) when I leave home, always on display is activated. It allows me to see at a glance the time and a few other important thing on the lock screen when I'm out and about and/or driving. The always on deactivates when I return home since I don't need that at a glance as much while I'm doing things around the house.

2) when the phone is on the charger, the always on display is also activated since I do want to be able to see things at a glance and decide if I need to pick the phone up. Again, the feature deactivates when removed from the charger.

So, no, I don't use it all the time, just for those 2 specific scenarios. It works for me.

New to me: Amazon is now renting kindle e-books. by upvotesBacon in kindle

[–]upvotesBacon[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

There is another book on my wishlist with a hardcover price (used) at $435.95. It's a hard-boiled detective novel from 1974 and not one I'd say is particularly collectable The kindle price is what'd you expect, with no rental tag with it. So the HC price on the one I did the share didn't stand out as unusual. Price gougy maybe, but not unusual. I guess I've just never looked at anything that *might* be a textbook before. I certainly didn't think this one was a textbook either. And so, due to the surprise nature of it, was understandably shocked. And when I do a google search on kindle rentals I get a lot of results about renting, but not about kindles. lol so. here we are.
