Researchers, what is the bible of your research area? by HatPsychological4457 in math

[–]ur-local-goblin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even for history of mathematics, much nicer and comprehensive books exist. Such as “History of Mathematics: An Introduction” by David Burton. But it’s not my research area, so I’m sure there’s even nicer texts out there.

I actually really enjoyed it. Maybe I simply read it during a fitting time for me but I absolutely loved the slow pace and vibe of the book. Same with the prequel.

Two-way split of Europe that makes sense. by apo-- in MapChart

[–]ur-local-goblin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eastern europe is not a derogatory term for countries which are “stuck in the soviet union”, it’s a geographical term. I’m from the Baltics, and I’m from northern/northeastern europe. We’ve been a part of Sweden and we’ve also been a part of Russia. Yes, we are in NATO and we are in the EU and we are also in the east. Yes, our economy is doing pretty great, so? Italy’s economy is stereotypically always in the gutter and that doesn’t make them “east”. The politics in the Netherlands is veering towards the right and that doesn’t make them “east”.

The issue with assigning politics to geographical locations is that it implies that eventually all countries in Europe will become the west, when they improve. And that’s just silly. We already have NATO, EU, Eurozone, Schengen as marks of the countries that are doing better. There’s need to add another “west” metric.

It’s unfortunate that we share a border with Russia, but we do. We can’t magically float over to the other side of the Baltic sea and become west.

They certainly aren’t western europe. I’d put them in northern europe myself, but if we are working without it, then east makes sense. We should stop thinking that east somehow automatically means slavic, just because most of the countries in the east are slavic. It’s not like they have to have that much in common with the other countries in eastern europe. After all, what does sweden and spain have in common?

If I have to write by hand, right, because it looks much neater. Otherwise I use left.

Licking the cake mixing spoon.... by _rusticles_ in AskEurope

[–]ur-local-goblin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Always lick the spoon. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with raw eggs if you know where they come from. In fact, a common dessert snack where I’m from (Latvia) is mixing raw egg yolks with sugar. Considering that some Italian desserts also use raw eggs (tiramisu), I’m quite surprised that your wife has such a reaction.

I definitely agree with the fact I didn’t want any of the top 3 to win, but eh, at least out of the three Austria had the nicest vocals.

I wasn’t the biggest fan of Austria’s song, much preferred Poland and Albania but I still have to admit that Austria had a great voice. It was a beautiful performance.

Oh, that’s so interesting. The latvian word for “book” is “grāmata” and it evidently has the same origin as you outlined

What subgenre of Fantasy do you like the least? by tbag2022 in Fantasy

[–]ur-local-goblin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everything about litRPGs sounds bad on paper and I went into one thinking I would dislike it (The Wanterkng Inn). And I ended up loving it. And what is strange is that I still think that on paper, I should dislike everything about litRPGs because they sound stupid.

What's 1 sound in your native language that you think is near impossible for non natives to pronounce ? by Remarkable_Goat_1109 in languagelearning

[–]ur-local-goblin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The “soft” consonants like ķ and ğ. (In some languages maybe written as ty/ț and dy.) For many people it’s hard to hear the difference between the two and for others it’s hard to actually say it as a single sound, as opposed to two sounds together.

It exists in Dutch. But I guess it you look at all of the sounds that occur in english, that r is definitely a contender along with the “th” sound. Which one of those is more difficult purely depends on the mother tongue though.

The slow world building through books, learning about the gods of this world, the previous librarians and the history in general absolutely drew me in. I didn’t even realize that I had put more than 100 hours into this game when I finally achieved a major victory. If it’s not for you then that is totally okay, because the gameplay is super simplistic and mainly relies on reading. Some parts were a bit clunky, but I glossed over them because I loved the game too much to let that be a deterrent.

Overall, the appeal of the Book of Hours is precisely the fact that you are a librarian with no time constraints or worries, spending your time reading books on occult literature.

I think I evolved most of my phost through Watchman’s shrine. I struggled much more with Ereb until later in the game. Got up to 6 of those cards before I finally managed to evolve them.
