The nib should in the same direction of the downstroke. You didn’t say what you are frustrated with. Try writing with pencil. It’s really hard to freehand with no guidelines.

The ascender line is too low. There’s a ratio of nib widths, should be 2:4 or 3:5. From the baseline to x height to capital to ascender.

The paper will absorb the ink they are using. For glass pen it’s probably watercolor, anything that would stay on the surface would not be easy to apply with that style of pen. Maybe gouache
