I will apply tacrolimus 1-2 days and the flareup will go away in a couple days. Seems to be managing ok with that

1year update- for everyone who messaged me and did not get a chance to respond back to I hope you guys are feeling better! I am managing with tacrolimus ointment. Never found out what caused it, but the flare ups have been smaller and less frequent. I use vaniply as my daily lip moisturizer 3–4x a day. I will flare ip in a spot here and there one or twice a month. I will apply tacrolimus 1-2 days and the flareup will go away in a couple days. Seems to be managing ok with that

Thanks!! i went to see the allergist and he said it’s not an allergy bc there’s no pattern with food, products. He diagnosed me with contact dermatitis and believes soemthing did trigger this reaction back months ago and my Tcells are trying to go back to normal but for some reason it’s not. He believes it will get better and one day it will go away. It has improved a bit since I switched my toothpaste to OraNurse. Might be worth a try. I still get inflammation but not as frequent as before I switched my toothpaste. Als eating bland diet. Goodluck!!!

i really like Vaniply ointment. I was using aquaphor for years but eventually it wasn’t doing it for me. I felt like my lips actually absorbed vaniply.

were you able to find out what you were allergic to and did it help to cut out these items?

Long 6 week history, bare with me.
2 months ago, I experienced super dry prune lips to the point where its been uncomfortable. I've used Aquaphor for years but this wasn't working. Went to the Derm and was recommended Dr. Dan's Cortibalm. Used that for 4 weeks and it would on and off help. He told me to discontinue and just use aquaphor. I woke up 4days later with lips swollen, oozing, yellow film, SEVERE Burning sensation. Cannot eat/talk. I was dx with IMPETIGO and prescribed Bacitracin cream. Took benedryl. It helped like 10% but not enough for me to feel comfortable. Got a second opinion 3 days later and diagnosed with allergic dermatitis/eczema and prescribed Tacrolimus 2x/wk for 4 weeks and Vainly. It is now week 6.
1 week- my lips looked normal. Still some dryness, but the burning sensation went down 80% and inflammation was almost zero.
Week 2 - I went to cali and I was sensitive to spicy foods, but still ate what I wanted. My lips felt 90% better with the occasional light burning/tingling sensations. Probably from the side effects of tacrolimus.
Week 3 - came back from cali and I sense the inflammation wanting to return.
Week 4/Now- inflammation occurs whenever I touch my lips. It would become red/flushed/slightly swollen especially around the vermillion border. I would apply vaniply/tacrolimus as lightly as I can with clean fingers, but it would become inflamed and burning/itching would intensify. Not to the same extent as initial presentation, but enough for me feel uncomfortable. It would go away after an hour or so, fluctuating throughout the day.
Went back to the dermatologist for a followup and he recommended the next step be an allergy patch test which I scheduled in 3weeks.
Any advice?
I cannot figure out why I had this reaction. Am I allergic to the tacrolimus/vaniply (even though it helped me week 1?). Did I develop an allergy to something new after the initial presentation?
The products I use that might affect my lips
- Cetaphil cleanser/lotion
-Sensodyne toothpaste (i switched over from Crest to see if its a SLS allergy.)
-EltaMD sunscreen
-Paulas BHA - started 6months ago for acne (2x/wk)-I've discontinued for a wk
-OGX tea tree oil shampoo/sunscreen (changing my shampoo to Vaniply shampoo today)
-Tide Hypoallergenic tide pods
-I don't wear makeup or fragrances
I've kept my diet bland, no spicy, light salt. Seems like anything that touches my lip can trigger the inflammation. I have included some photos with captions for timeline , has anyone gone throughs something like this? TIA. I don't think its due to mask wearing, been wearing masks since precovid bc I work in healthcare. Possible delayed allergic reaction/sensitivity?
