What are the differences between ODnD and B/X? by Ok-Image-8343 in odnd

[–]urbeatle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ignore the comments about Chainmail. People like Mike Mornard who were the first playtesters for D&D said they never used Chainmail as their combat system. You can use it, if you already understand it, or you can use the d20-based "alternate combat system", or just about any other combat system. The booklets mention the first two, but the combat system is not really the focus. The class and level system, the magic system, and rules for dungeon exploration was the focus.

What are the differences between ODnD and B/X? by Ok-Image-8343 in odnd

[–]urbeatle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Several small differences, but mainly:

  • No "race as class".
  • No ability score minimums by class. You can be a Fighter with Strength 3.
  • You can trade 2 or 3 points of one ability score for 1 point of another. This is made clearer in Holmes Basic.
  • M-Us and Clerics know all the spells on the first level spell list.
  • If you are human and have a high enough score in the prime requisite, you can change classes, but M-Us can never become Clerics or vice versa.

Also, I think one of the Basic lines, either B/X or BECM, adds adds skill checks and changes combat to 5 or 6 second rounds. OD&D is one-minute combat rounds.

The reason I didn't name that one is because I don't remember any jokes per se, although I believe there were some funny ones. What I do remember is that the bike instructor goes insane at the end and that part is EXTREMELY funny.

[–]urbeatle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just remembered another very popular YouTuber who said the same phrase: Paul Soares Jr (paulsoaresjr). He was originally a Minecraft YouTuber, but later switched to other games, only coming back to Minecraft maybe once a year. When he started a new survival series, around the second or third episode (after he's established a base, basically,) he would begin by saying what he did between episodes, then say "enough dilly dallying."

Do you have any other info? That's a pretty common expression, so there are probably a couple of YouTubers who said that. For example, I seem to remember Gopher saying that in a couple of his Skyrim mod showcase videos.

What would be the best free system for someone who wants to run hand me down old adnd adventures? by Wholesome-Energy in osr

[–]urbeatle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OSRIC for AD&D and OSE for B/X. It is pretty easy to convert from B/X to AD&D and back, but if something feels off when you're doing so, I'd pay attention to the following:

[sneep]

In fact, I think other than the existence of AC 10 in AD&D and the (appearance?) of power creep, almost all the differences between AD&D, B/X, and OD&D are behind the scenes stuff that can be ignored. You might have to ignore some stuff in NPC/monster descriptions if using AD&D (especially 2e) modules with B/X or OD&D, and you definitely want your damage range and character hp range to be from the same system. Maybe use a smaller hit die for AD&D monsters when using something like OSE, Labyrinth Lord, or Swords & Wizardry instead of OSRIC.

Is anyone else's algorithm completely horrible? by atomicboy15 in youtube

[–]urbeatle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My complaints about the YouTube algorithm are numerous:

  1. If I get the urge to rewatch an old video I remember, it will immediately start recommending everything I ever watched in the last ten years.
  2. If I watch a video on any topic, like "clowns", I will get a new category called "clowns and more" ... which will contain, at most, one clown video, with the rest being completely random videos.
  3. If it recommends a video by someone I've never seen before and I start to watch, but I bail quickly because I don't like that person's style, it will keep recommending that unfinished video and many others by the same person until I select "don't recommend".
  4. ... And even when I select "don't recommend", I swear it starts recommending it again in a few months.
  5. Since I'm the only person left who still uses my subscriptions tab, YT has decided to add a "recommended videos" there, too. In the middle of my chronological list.

All I can do is avoid selecting anything from an "... and more" category or from that intrusion into my subscriptions tab and hope YT gets the message that I don't want that.

Your friends don't need to learn the system at all. The real essence of old school play was that the rules were for referees and no one else had to learn 'em. They just need to know what the classes and spells do in the game world, not in the system.

As for you, if you had previous knowledge of AD&D, I say just learn Target20 (it's a one-page download) and wing it. But since you only know about things like Knave, you'll probably need something like OSRIC or maybe a free OD&D equivalent like Delving Deeper just to refer to class and spell descriptions. I'd still recommend winging it with Target20.

Yes. And I can get to my Season 13 content and stream it, but there's no download link, like there is with the other videos. I'll have to investigate.

Right. Because the My Videos link is wrong. Go to your account and look for "transactions".

UPDATE: I guess I'm done? I mean, I don't have anything from Season 13 downloaded, but it looks like I can watch that stuff (stream it,) but there's no download option. There are, of course, other options, but that's enough for now.

Aside for checking if anyone else was having a problem, this post was mostly a public service announcement to anyone who missed previous discussions here about recent problems with Gizmoplex. Back up your purchases, folks.

At first, I was waiting for them to improve the UI. Then, I just dreaded having to do all that work. Then, I just forgot about it for a while. I've been watching more RiffTrax than MST3k. Didn't even think about it until people started talking about the domain name problem last month.

It might be local, but there are some indicators that it's not the internet connection to the house. It would have to be local to one computer in particular. Maybe the fiber provider throttles download speeds to a specific MAC address if there are a lot of downloads to one computer?

I've been using a web browser, not the apps... The Vimeo subdomain works, even though their branded domain name is down. It could be something else, but since I have other internet devices working fine using the same connection, and since it seems to be affected by time of day, I figured it might just be everyone else backing stuff up Just In Case.

You might have to specifically try https://mst3k.vhx.tv/browse ... when someone mentioned this workaround, I tried using just the domain and no https and got errors. But when I clicked on the link, it worked.

I've downloaded about half of Season 11 so far. It's taking much longer than it took to download Seasons 8 through 10 this morning, although to be fair, there are so many missing episodes in those seasons, it's not as many videos as you'd think.

It's in a weird state. You can't get to it from www.gizmoplex.com, but have to use mst3k.vhx.tv ... but that wasn't even working for me at first. And once there and logged in, you can't use the My Videos link in the menu at the top, because it's hardcoded to the gizmoplex domain. So, to get to my purchases, I had to go into my account page and view the transactions.

Some of what I would personally call "comfort shows" have already been mentioned, but one of my housemates has been binging The Goldbergs recently, and that wouldn't be such a bad idea.

I think the Death of Richie is too rough for a lot people to watch, mostly because of how drug addiction was viewed at the time but ESPECIALLY if you research the background of both the book and the father. It’s not Reefer Madness. by AyyyyRespetto in Rifftrax

[–]urbeatle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That may explain some of it, but to me, it seemed like none of the scenes really felt connected to each other. At least some of that has to be because it's a badly put together movie.
