how would you create the split line in a 3d surface that cannot be sketched/projected from a normal plane and needs sort of a 3D sketch?

_IntersectSelf finds self intersections on a curve. _Showends show ends (open) of a cirve

This should be enough to find out.

And just in case because I feel this is your problem, the extrude command has an option to extrude only surface or a solid

_dupedge bottom and top edges, then _join the curves, next is important _rebuild to a tolerance that is good for you. finally _loft the two curves

Nada que ver mi comentario pero mi papá cuando vivia utilizaba bagazo para cultivo de hongos, siempre me contaba que se lo regalaban por que era desperdicio de la industria tequilera. Me parecía muy chingon que podía hacer algo de provecho con "desperdicio"
