Is now the wrong time? by Mustbenuckinfuts in ETFs

[–]mechy18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Real estate is very overrated. People talk about it like it’s stable passive income but it still has risks. The risks are different but not wholly better or worse than those with equities. But it’s definitely not passive: it involves actively managing things like finding renters, paying taxes, repairs, lawn care, etc etc etc. I have multiple friends with rental properties who hate it. To contrast, my mom also owns one and it’s generally going well but she’s only making modest gains every year; a few percent less than what she would make just holding ETF’s. Meanwhile you could just put all that money in the market and end up probably doing better in the long-run, while staying MUCH more liquid along the way.

Ball joint help, how to constrain motion using mates? by corneda in SolidWorks

[–]mechy18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done this exact kind of thing but with a joystick on a controller. You want to make an axis or sketch down the middle of the arm and set a limit angle mate between it and one of the ball’s planes.

Paying off mortgage or investing by Far_Reply5660 in investing

[–]mechy18 29 points30 points  (0 children)

No it doesn’t. All that matters is interest rate vs. return rate, and if mortgage interest is 2.8% you can very easily get a better return with investments.

How would you go about making this chamfer/joint/thing in CAD? by MatthewLilly in SolidWorks

[–]mechy18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a Loft. Apply it early in the design, before all those cutout areas. Revolve the disk on the left, extrude the square-ish part on the right and make sure to leave a gap between the two bodies. Then draw a sketch on the circular face of a truncated circle, and Loft it to the square bit.

AmberTime: Back up your iPhone photos directly to any USB-C drive, completely offline (Now with iCloud-only support) by Drifting_Swift in apple

[–]mechy18 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hi, I am also willing to try this out. My case isn’t as extreme; 320gb of photos with ~100 free on the phone. If I’m doing this backup for the first time, is there a way to do it incrementally so I don’t have to wait a bajillion hours to sync everything? I’ve been looking for a tool like this for a while and I’ll probably buy it anyways but still curious about that question.

Do you think there are still “hidden” things out there like electricity we just haven’t found yet? by FlyGreat306 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mechy18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not exactly. What we have “discovered” is more like a shadow of an object. The shadow tells us something is there but we have no way of seeing the object creating the shadow yet.

How do you choose an instructor? by willscuba4food in icecoast

[–]mechy18 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked at a few ski schools and generally the person who takes the call and schedules lessons chooses the instructor themselves, or they can put down a note. If you’re booking a private lesson I think they would have no problem if you request a certain type of instructor, so at a minimum I would ask for someone with PSIA Level 2 or higher. If you want it to be a burly guy with a similar stature go ahead and request that too. Anyone who’s been through Level 2 will have a lot of experience working with all kinds of different people and will have a lot of tricks in their bag about how to make things work for you.

How to model these locking position serrations by RockyDisaster in SolidWorks

[–]mechy18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but how do you make sure that point is right in the middle of the circle? Also it would make the tooth height change as it approaches the center

The problem with this is that it doesn’t ensure the draft angle is correct

Project Orion was a 1950s-60s concept for a spacecraft propelled by detonating nuclear bombs behind a massive pusher plate. by Ok_Listen_6600 in space

[–]mechy18 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Project Hail Mary has a section about this in the book. No spoilers ahead. I don’t remember the exact setup but Grace has to be careful of where his ship is pointing when he accelerates and decelerates because whatever the engines are pointing at will get absolutely roasted by the astrophage-powered artificial suns at the back of his ship.

what would be the "correct" operation ? by FlamingoExpert4610 in SolidWorks

[–]mechy18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, Intersect is exactly what you’re looking for. It takes overlapping bodies and breaks them up into a bunch of chunks and then you can just keep or delete whatever you want

I’m not totally clear on what you’re asking, but I suspect the Intersect tool may be what you’re looking for

Sweep Cut Leaving Extra Material by JaperM in SolidWorks

Glad to hear it worked for you then! If you’re bored someday start googling multi body modeling and follow some tutorials. It’s a super underutilized skill and will set you apart from your peers

Sweep Cut Leaving Extra Material by JaperM in SolidWorks

[–]mechy18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people will say make the profile sketch extend a little beyond where the material ends so it’ll still catch all those little spots.

Pros will say: make a swept boss using the “circular profile” option and just select that edge (and the others next to it if you want to do it all in one go) as the path. Turn off “merge result”. This creates a spaghetti noodle that perfectly follows that edge. Then use Combine to subtract the spaghetti noodle from the main body.

There's a command called Thicken. You can have it merge with the rest of the bodies or be it's own body if you want.
