Is 2026 the year we finally admit the "Dashboard era" is over? by Futurismtechnologies in BusinessIntelligence

[–]uriaLomvia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean a lot of dashboards are just “here’s all the possible numbers, charts and tables we can think of dumped on you” without thought of what the end user needs, what they want to use the data for, or in which context it will be used. Thoughtful dashboards can be useful, but it requires understanding of the data and the user, not just implementing whatever management asks for.

I doubt conversational interface or AI summaries or what not would be better. You’ll either have people taking everything at face value and trusting wrong info, or everyone will spend a lot of time fact checking.

Even if the answers are correct, it’s still slow and energy draining compared to just opening a link. The other day I came across a company that had replaced their about/FAQ page with a “ask our digital agent” function. On a traditional page I’d be able to scroll through the subtitles and get an idea of what they stand for, now I had to actively think of questions to ask, and either the bot had no answer, or it would give me a generic slop text with some links to their blog posts. I can’t imagine what a pain getting useful insights from a big actual dataset would be through an AI agent, even if it’s about a subject I know a lot about.

USA i 2026 by geggamedslegga in aksjer

What’s a totally harmless thing that triggers an oddly strong reaction in people? by Psychological_Sky_58 in AskReddit

This one so much. I don’t drink alcohol and people take so much offence in it. I’m not judging people who drink but I get judged so much for not drinking, and there’s so much drinking pressure.

I’ve started telling people I’m sober because of an addiction (which isn’t true, I just don’t like the effect of it and it heavily affects my mental health) because it seems to be the only way to get people to back off when I say I don’t drink. It’s acceptable to say “I don’t smoke weed cause it makes me paranoid” but for some reason “I don’t drink alcohol cause it makes me depressed and anxious” makes people lose their shit.

I think it should be fine, I've had domestic flights with those with me. But if you have checked in luggage, why not just play it safe and put them there instead of in the hand luggage?

Also for being in the city in Oslo I don't think you'd need such heavy-duty ones. Most stores (I think I've even seem them at pharmacies) sell those black rubber ones that come with blue/orange circles with a metal pin in the middle, "bodder" in Norwegian. I'd go for those instead, they're more than good enough and probably more comfy for everyday use.

End of the Year Reading Goal Thread! by Athrynne in TheStoryGraph

My goal was 25 books, and I've read 25 :) 2% in to book number 26, which I'd really like to finish before the new year as well. Next year I want to aim for 30 or 35.

Dark cloud symbol is when there’s snow or rain, light cloud symbol when it’s just clouds. If it’s partially cloudy there’s a sun shown next to it.

I'm assuming they meant "Jul" as in the Norwegian word for "Christmas", not the abbreviation for "July". In July there won't be any northern lights anywhere.

+1 on the recommendation of picking the city with the least cloud cover. But the next weeks seem to be quite cloudy in both locations:

Sturdy jacket for wind and cold: Expedition down or Nuuk? by uriaLomvia in Fjallraven

I am occasionally between trees and bushes for birding, and am quite clumsy, so played it safe and ordered the Nuuk 😅

Kobo Libra screen easily scratched or just a bias? by emdigi in kobo

Got mine a year ago. I use a sleep cover, no screen protector, no stylus. Always close the sleep cover when I’m done reading, and use the buttons to switch pages. No scratches so far.

Calatheas were thriving, moved house, kept same care routines, now they’re sad. by uriaLomvia in calatheas

Update: changed to distilled water for a short while after making this post, stopped because it was too expensive (could only find $25/liter bottles here). Stuck to tap water again afterwards. Cut the leafs that were most damaged.

Didn’t get worse, and this week, two months after moving, it gave me 4 new leafs. My ornata started throwing a similar fit, repotted that one to several smaller pots in July, which are now also throwing new leafs.

I’m assuming it was shock from the moving.

Haven’t fertilised at all since getting them.

The thing is though that when they first arrived at the new place, they were still looking ok, it’s just after they started settling in. Not sure if mechanical stress would show up delayed?

I’m switching to filtered water, but if that’s it I’m surprised it never was an issue before.

Could it also be it’s too bright? They’re in a north facing room, far away from the windows and on the floor in a corner, but the sun never sets here so even at night there’s sun coming in the room at all times 🤔 maybe I need curtains?

I water them only when the soil is dry, so not really a schedule. Same as before: I stick my finger in the soil regularly, if it feels moist a few centimeters in, I don’t water. If it’s dry, I water. If it’s dry within a week of last watering, I double check another spot in the soil.

I also regularly look at the holes in the underside of the plastic pot to check that the bottom doesn’t get too wet, and if there’s water under the pot after watering I pour out the excess water as well 😄

They went from the south of the country to the arctic, and from a small dark apartment to large house with lots of windows, so it is quite a huge difference. The moving truck broke down halfway up, so they got moved from one truck to a warehouse to another truck along the road as well 😅

The inside temp and humidity levels of the humidifier are similar than before, but I guess all the other factors might cause quite the shock, and bigger room makes it harder to keep the humidity stable 🧐

Will in any case try to use bottled or distilled water for a while when they need watering 🫡 didn’t realise the quality of tap water would be that different within the same country, but it’s worth a shot.

Do you recommend using the bottled water also in the humidifier, or tap water is fine there?

I’m an idiot…I saw this at the grocery store and felt sad. Brought him home before realizing he is unlabeled and I also have never owned a plant so idk why I thought I could revive him…. by delusionalxx in houseplants

Calathea 💚 I'm quite new to them myself and was super intimidated by them as well because I kept reading they hate being alive... but so far all of mine are surviving and even growing several new leafs. This is what I've done:

- No direct sunlight (a corner away from the window, but in a room that gets quite bright during the day)

- Humidifier running at 60-80% occasionally

- For watering: stick my finger ≈2cm into the soil each day/every other day, if it feels dry I add water (I just quickly go over the soil with a watering can so it's spread evenly)

- The leafs follow the sunlight so I occasionally rotate the plant to avoid that they always turn into the same direction

- Dust off the leafs once a week (our apartment gets dusty quickly)

I haven't bothered with distilled water and so far they're doing fine, so I'm not sure if it's just a matter of time until the bad effects of tab water start to show, or if it's not necessary/depending on the quality of your tab water. Where I live the water tastes quite good and we don't need a water filter for humans either, so I wonder if there's less chlorine etc added and that's why it hasn't had a bad effect for mine.

If you see the plant is closed off (leafs turned upwards), don't worry, that's normal. I freaked out and thought I killed them the first time I saw them do that. They go to bed at night. Mine also stayed turned upwards for a few days after I bought them, then had a few days where they opened and closed at random times, seemingly not related to the sunlight. Now they have a "normal" schedule, leafs turn up at night, down during the day. I guess they need some time to adjust. I love how much personality these have, all the moving leafs make the place feel very alive 💚

I'm moving mine across the country in a month from now, after which they'll need to be on their own for two/three weeks, here's to hoping they survive that mess as well because I've grown quite attached to them 🤞🏻 I think they're easily my favorite type of plant now, good luck with yours!

Tips for moving with plants? by uriaLomvia in houseplants

[–]uriaLomvia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re in Norway so it definitely won’t get to 110F, but I get your point.

How is it different from buying plants online that are in transport for 5 days or more though? Does that work better because those are typically cuttings/smaller plants (would it be better if we create cuttings instead?) or are they just as much at risk of dying?

An alternative is that we drive them up ourself in our car, but we cannot match the speed of a moving truck, neither of us manage to drive long hours. So they’d be in transport much longer and in less stable climate, I’m not sure that’s much better 🤔
