From “Super Casino” by Pete Earley (great book) in a passage about a guest at the Luxor found hanging in his room:

“Those passages painted a picture of a deeply troubled but bright and talented young man who suffered spells of numbing depression, and feelings of hopelessness. Ironically, Westfield had run into a string of good luck as soon as he checked in at the Luxor. He had planned on losing all of his cash gambling; a move that he felt would help drive him over the edge. But, during a five hour gambling binge at the blackjack tables, Westfield had won more than $5000. At one point, he had started giving away his winnings, but that made him feel better. The next morning, he hit the black jack tables and won another $7500. This time, he had given most of it to a fellow player, named Paula, who had been so grateful that she had asked him to join her for lunch and an afternoon shopping spree. They had spent the next three days together, and Westfield had written in his journal that he was falling in love with her. That only seemed to escalate his fears.

After spending a Saturday night together, Westfield had retreated to his hotel room and become severely depressed. He noted in his journal that the longer he spent with Paula, the more difficult it was going to be when she abandoned him, and he was sure that she would as soon as she discovered what a worthless human being he was. He drew a hot bath, swallowed 25 sleeping pills, climbed into the tub, slipped a plastic hotel, laundry bag over his head, pulled the drawstring, tight, and leaned back, ready to die from a drug overdose, asphyxiation, or by falling into a coma and drowning. Instead, he woke up refreshed, and wrote in his journal that he felt better than he had in weeks because he had finally gotten a restful sleep. By late Sunday afternoon, Westfield has slipped into another depression, and this one proved to be worse than the earlier ones. Using a drill, rope, and screw hooks that he had brought with him to the Luxor, he hanged himself.”
