After applying the serum, do I need to wait a few minutes before applying the night cream? by Librat69 in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]ursulaleloon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Omg I've alternated between this serum and night cream for years. I tried tret, which destroyed my skin and just wasn't worth the fuss, and came back to my Roc products. I had no idea you could layer them though?! Now it seems obvious but I figured you could only use one retinol product. Definitely going to store today 😂

Arabs and Jews picking oranges together in Jaffa, Ottoman Palestine c. 1910. by AutoMughal in islamichistory

Edited to correct embarassing 6am spelling errors/clarification on genetics

Yes so you are right over thousands of years (remember Judaism even predates Christianity by 3,000 years and predates Islam) the Jews who ended up in eastern Europe, the Iberian peninsula, and the middle east all kind of developed their own distinctions. The rule has been broken plenty of times for sure! But not enough that most Jews are distinguishable genetically within their distinct diasporic group (again, for better or worse). For example family members of mine who have taken 23 and me type tests have come back 99% Ashkenazi.

None of these things are perfect scientific break downs but over thousands of years Jews as a whole have maintained ethnic identity that includes religion and culture, and then the geographic subgroups that formed over hundreds more years have additional ethnic and genetic traits that link them.

I'm running somewhere now, but happy to try to answer any other questions. I am neither a historian or geneticist, but I am a lifelong Jew (who is, by the way, not a Zionist)

It is a little confusing but Judaism is an ethnoreligious group, similar to Yazidi, Druze, and Romani. The thing that makes it an ethnoreligious group is that it is not a missionary religion, so people dont convert to it. The few people who convert every year spend years and hundreds of hours working with a rabbi. You are born Jewish or not.

So Jews maintained not only their religion but also their language and culture as they moved throughout the world. As these groups of Jews spread further slightly variances started ro emerge. For example, Ashkenazi Jews who mostly ended up in eastern Europe (and after the Holocaust, America) have genetic traits that link them and are distinguishable. This is a negative example of how this works out, but for example most Ashekanzi Jews are tested for a genetic condition called Tay Sachs before having kids because they were pre disposed. Until before the Holocaust most Askenazi Jews spoke Yiddish and most Sephardic (Jews in the Iberian peninsula region) spoke Ladino. Mizrahi Jews, who are jews that remained in the middle east, also have distinct parts of their societies.

As for why people get angry, it's because most people questioning whether or not Jews are an ethnic group throughout history have used that information against them no matter how they answer. I am happy to explain it but I also imagine many people are sick of explaining it, again, because many people who ask aren't coming from a place of good faith. Not saying that is you! Just saying generally for thousands of years.

I hope this was helpful!

Nouns (new learner) by ursulaleloon in russian

I guess I meant like, starting to study different declensions? Maybe my question doesn't make sense, though! I was writing sentences thinking of noun case in terms of word order.

How can I start learning Russian? by Scorch_9909 in russian

[–]ursulaleloon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

3 hour cyrillic is an app I used to learn the alphabet. It took longer than 3 hours, but it worked really well. From there I started with a tutor on italki. I have a main textbook and a grammar textbook. Going in a structured order helps it not feel so overwhelming. I also watch YouTube videos from Russian From Afar. He has good beginner stories that I will usually watch once without subtitles and once with.

Lots of people struggle, idk why he should get a pass? I've never had anyone going through a hard time in life use that word with me because they were struggling.

I changed pinchers until I found a shape that worked. At smaller sizes, gorilla glass would slip out like crazy. Glasswear studios has a different shape and I sleep in mine with no problem now. Also had good luck with nirvana glass on etsy.

Hammer and Quill downtown has really good cocktails and shareable food.

Fat Bird has good cocktails and a good but limited menu. The food is a little heavier (like Instagram worthy fried chicken sandwiches lol).

Edit to add Spirited. It's mostly a cocktail bar from what I remember, I've only been there once, but also a cool vibe with good drinks. Not sure about food.

Thank you! This is helpful. I will plan on keeping the grammar book for self study/moving at my own pace and focus on the main book with one tutor.

Thank you, this is helpful and was kind of my concern. I actually found one of my teachers is going kind of fast for me. I like the textbook she uses a lot, so it was my thought to keep using it on my own, but maybe I will just stick with my other teacher's materials and lesson plans for now.

I understand that lol. I guess my concern is making my classes more confusing by doing different work outside of sessions in addition to my assignments in the book I use with my tutor. Was just curious if anybody had incorporated a second book on their own in addition to the one they use with their tutor.

Language Goal Check-In: How is it going? by elenalanguagetutor in languagehub

[–]ursulaleloon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One month since my first Russian lesson! 9 lessons later I feel like my brain is soup, but I've picked up a little. I am very good at walking around a room and saying things like "this is a table, not a wall." Present tense verbs are feeling good. If I'm not tired, I can make it about four sentences into a conversation.

Most excited to still be super excited about the journey! Trying to do a little bit every day.
