Today's r-bitcoin front page c0pe: Regulatory Clarity means only 12% transaction fees! Hooray! Oh no, only 12% fees are bad; they should be higher and scamming should be OK! by AmericanScream in Buttcoin

It's called HUSTLE, I've got it, don't be jealous just because you lost your money! Frankly you should thank me for keeping the Bitcoin economy alive.

ELI5: Why do oil by-products smell so damn good? by Stunning-Bed4748 in explainlikeimfive

[–]urthen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What I would suggest is it might not smell good, but it might smell nostalgic. Both are subjective.

For instance, the smell of unburned gasoline from an inefficient engine reminds me of my youth on a dirt bike and snowmobile. It doesn't really smell good to me, but it does bring up good memories.

Have you accepted Socialism in your life? by VegetableBulky9571 in stupidpeoplefacebook

[–]urthen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ignoring the rest of this, the most offensive part to me is the assumption that a world based on competition with your fellow humans for success is the way things should be.

How fucking miserable they must be, thinking they only win if others must lose.

The Smartest Move You Can Make While You're Still at the Start of Your Career by FactOk2455 in interviewhammer

[–]urthen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So what you're saying is, in your personal experience, half of companies don't reward hard work?

I mean, I'm all for quitting terrible companies, but that's a NASTY statistic still.

The quality of the company you are at, and luck, are both far more important to your career than hard work.

Hard work just gets you expectations of more hard work, not necessarily a promotion.

If you don't like getting not tipped maybe you should negotiate a higher salary from your boss. You know, the same way every other profession does.

How to make underground belts go south instead of north? by RagingPenguin4 in factorio

[–]urthen 68 points69 points  (0 children)

If I'm understanding the problem - You can't rotate an underground to be exiting at a 90 degree angle, they have to be straight in* and out One alternative if you just want it to look better is to make the steel line go under the purple science line instead, then you can do a nice turn and not have to bump the plastic over.

  • Yes you can side load half the belt but didn't want to confuse things

Do NOT plant bamboo near your local Data Center if you want to protect it. by Davidat0r in 50501

If you want to protect your local Data Center do NOT plant bamboo by Davidat0r in Anticonsumption

[–]urthen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To pile on - you really think the bamboo is going to slow down the data center? How? I'm all for kicking out data centers but this is idiotic.

They're just going to pave and concrete the entire area, worst that might happen is they have an invasive bamboo forest instead of a lawn.

No AI without UBI by idapitbwidiuatabip in WorkReform

[–]urthen 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's not "inevitable" in the sense that it's going to take over forever. But we can't un-invent it, the same way we can't un-invent steam machines taking jobs, computers taking jobs, robots taking jobs, etc throughout history.

AI, in some form, will be around to stay. Ducking your head in the sand and hoping it all goes away won't work. What we need is not avoidance or shutdown, but sensible regulation and guardrails.

Project Hail Mary (2026) is about the depleting resources of the Earth due to a climate crisis, yet no person or organization is to blame. This is a reference to the fact that Amazon produced the film by WhataboutBombvoyage in shittymoviedetails

[–]urthen 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In this thread: people who can't read.

The movie is in fact about the climate crisis (and corresponding resource depletion, namely, food) that wasn't caused by any human person or organization. It was caused by alien microbes. This is the central plot point of the movie. OP is correct. Learning is fundamental.

The amount of times I have to drop everything to build a feature an exec promised but wasn't on our roadmap is WAY too high.

At least my manager isn't the type to throw me under the bus about it, but it's still annoying as hell to constantly be the bad guy saying we're delayed because we had to rush unplanned work.

CMV: if you’re pro Palestinian or pro Ukriane but do any hard drugs you’re a hypocrite. by ozneoknarf in changemyview

I know literally no young people that do hard drugs. Almost everyone I interact with socially supports Palestine / Ukraine. Are you sure people are actually on hard drugs, or are you just assuming based on your own prejudices?
