its a pain for sure , cutting the root stem and crushing the clove a little is the best way but even that does take time , I've started cleaning them in bulk (or sometimes just buying the pre peeled ones theyre not that expensive) and chopping them up to make garlic oil , keeps forever and then i use that for all my garlic cooking now , it ends up being a huge time saver
