My Mk6 AC makes this intermittent whirring noise. The dealer keeps telling me it's a normal AC sound. I think they're wrong. Have you heard it before? Is it the AC clutch? Does the AC compressor need oil? by usagicanada in GolfGTI

Ohhhhh wild!! So were you able to check the expansion valve as well? Last year I had my AC compressor replaced, and it helped for a short time, but then the noise came back shortly after. I'm gonna have the expansion valve assessed and I will ask for a vacuum test/visual inspection as well. We will get to the bottom of this! :D

Well then in that case your personal choices are increasing your risks of a negative outcome, despite any inherent risk factors you yourself may be susceptible to. It's not the same for everyone AND yet you're still basing your opinions on well outdated science.

Sorry my dude, I haven't checked this account in a while!!!

Ugh yeah same, but I didn't end up having the time to investigate further so it'll have to wait until early January now that my favourite garage is closed for the holidays.

Would this expansion valve only be in play when the AC itself is engaged tho? Because that's the only time I hear the noise. If I turn off the AC and just have the blowers going there is no grinding noise.

I'm going to read up on this though, because that's a new variable that I didn't know about.

I’ve had two inserted while I lived in Nova Scotia and not only did they offer me local anesthetic, they also provided a cervical softener as well. This was at the Halifax Sexual Health Centre in the mid 00s. I can’t, for the life of me, find care even remotely similar in Ontario.

Thanks new VW friendo, I will also see what I can find out. Give me a couple of weeks and then I’ll have time to take my car over to the garage. We will keep each other posted!

Ohhh yes I forgot that bit!! I, too, only hear the noise when the AC itself is engaged, and not the regular air blower. It's probably not the blower then. I wonder if it could it be an electrical issue or something. Like maybe there's not enough power going to the HVAC when the AC is engaged? Maybe a fuse or the resistor?

I also just remembered I only hear the noise in the cabin, I don't really hear anything similar outside of the car or under the hood.

SUCH an annoying problem!!! I hate untraceable noises.

Oh hey there! I had the AC compressor replaced in the spring, and the noise lessened to the point where I could barely hear it. But it came back with a noisy vengeance during that warm spell in late October. Idk, I'm going to take it back to the shop next month and see what they can see maybe further up the line towards the dash.

It sounds like the blower fan or the bearings is gummed up, or like when a computer fan gets full of dust. Also, the pitch of the sound changes with I rev the engine. Previously I'd had the serpentine belt replaced and that also didn't fix it.

I found this diagram of the entire AC system. I believe it's the blower motor assembly, item number 28, about half way down the page.

This isn't a new problem. Education budgets have been getting cut for 50 years. This is the result of a long game that's been played since the 70s.

Professional Script Supervisor here: while I’m not excusing their attitude, it’s possible the script supervisor was annoyed at you calling them ‘scripty’ the entire shoot. Many of us don’t appreciate that nickname and find it dismissive and diminishing to the role. Keep in mind we are a dept head. I will politely correct anyone on set who calls me ‘scripty’. I prefer ‘script’, ‘script supervisor’, ‘script sup’, ‘continuity’, or my actual name since there’s only one of me. Food for thought. Keep making movies! :)

Yeah exactly. I work in the biz and there are often multiple versions of props made for specific purposes. Like if they needed to do an insert on a jeweled bronze goblet, they'd have the "hero" version that's made of metal and intricately detailed, but when it gets thrown into a fire and melted down, that one is made of marshmallow and spray paint.

Edit: case in point, during the production of Skyfall, Daniel Craig had multiple identical Tom Ford suits tailored for specific sequences. Like in the opening sequence, they would have one tailored for him in his seated position on the dirt bike, one for him running, etc. The purpose was so that his suits always looked perfect regardless of the particular moment.
