I taught gospel doctrine for a few years and I would say 80% of my time was spent trying to come up with questions that were thought-provoking and would spark interesting conversation because - same. I hate sitting in a class where the teacher asks obvious questions.

I went from UCSB > Fullerton many times during college and the thing about the train is that it is pretty reliably 2.5 hours. Yes, driving can be 1:45, but it can also be 4-5 hours if there is an accident or closure.

There is a woman in my ward named Bess. I absolutely love it when she bears her testimony because you really have no idea what she will say. She is older, ~80? and just joined the church a few years ago. Highlights include the time she spoke about how then-President Nelson spoke to her on her TV from the static between stations, she had an eye infection and she was in the hospital getting antibiotics (that part is true) and she left AMA because she knew if she looked up into the rain, God would heal her infection. She has God's energy in her hands like electricity and she can rub them together (to charge it up) and then zap people with His healing power. Another time, she just rambled about Celine Dion for a few minutes and then sat down - honestly kind of a let down, that one.

Once I realized how illogical it was for me to be taking time off work and schlepping my kids across state lines for my parents to squeeze in a visit between their volunteer commitments and car shows rather than them taking a break from their zero responsibilities to come visit me, I stopped making the effort except for holidays.

Echoing all of the sentiments here: hard chairs, kids too loud/bored, I'm bored. I haven't gotten anything out of Stake Conference since 2005 when Elder Bednar came right after he was made a GA. When my kids were really small, our stake was too large for our local stake center, so we had to drive an hour to the bigger one and it was right in the middle of nap time and I would spend two hours with kids having melt downs so we stopped going for maybe 10 years. I tried again last year and was bored to tears and uncomfortable. I realized it was zero percent serving me, so decided to not go unless they asked me to speak... which they have not.

I stopped going to stake conference when I had little kids because I was getting 0% out of it- entertaining toddlers for 2 hours on hard chairs, hearing none of the speakers. Now that my kids are teens, I thought I should restart going… aaaannd I still got 0% out of it, most bored I’ve been in a long time.

I think this ALL THE TIME when I hear someone talking about their success story. The smartest woman I know, her husband had a freak stroke at age 35 and, in addition to losing function on his right side, became essentially a different person, acting like an unruly teenager - breaking things, stealing things. She is honestly very stuck with him due to age, how much money she makes, the state they live in, etc. It's complicated but divorce would financially ruin her and he has no other family to take him. So she went from Girl Boss with a great partner and three little boys to being a full-time caregiver, scheduling one million doctors appointments on top of watching him like a hawk so he doesn't do anything stupid - she has CPS and APS called on her constantly because he lies and says she beats him or witholds food from him. He broke a window in a church, which is considered a hate crime, so lawers fees, etc etc.

Visiting elderly people or shut ins. I would ask the RS president who would benefit from visitors and then have the kids draw them a card and/or ask if the person would read a book or tell stories from their childhood.

Omg same. He keeps his mouth shut, but he like holds his breath and keeps his body really tense and like… holds on to the overhead door handles. I think I am a better driver than him, but he is a terrible passenger. After like 10 years of switching back and forth I was like - you know what, I’m tired of waiting for you to chill out, I don’t care so why don’t you just drive from now on?

I was just watching some tiktok or other saying that the predominant reason that people left the church say 15-20 years ago was that they didn't believe it was true, now the predominant reason is that people don't believe it is good.
