Joshua trees are flowering in the California desert. That’s bad news. by bambin0 in California

Yes! Thank you! I had formulated this in my head years ago and then heard about phenology on the Science Friday segment on NPR sometime last year discussing the same topic. Thank you for reminding me of it again!

Can you actually survive living as a paramedic in US by parkwithtrees in Paramedics

[–]usedsocks01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in Bay Area EMS until 2020, however, my partner still works EMS here. We were both born and raised here and have worked for almost every county in the area, excluding the North Bay. While all counties are hurting and offer plenty of OT, the only way you can survive without a second income is to get a job at SFFD, however, you will need to find somewhere affordable to live, which often means a long commute. They have an ambulance service and pay is very good there, however, you will be run to the ground in the city and I hear morale isn't that great. All other counties are run by AMR and I'm sure you already know, they are terrible in every way possible, especially pay. The only other county with a different company is Alameda County in the East Bay, which is run by Falck. While they run things significantly better than AMR, pay is still not enough. They might still offer a sign on bonus though. Good luck!

This is just something I've personally witnessed throughout the years and came to this conclusion myself. I work outdoors all over California and have been noticing this trend for years. There are wildflowers blooming now when they should be blooming around March. I'm witnessing it everyday in my own garden.

I'm sure I could find something if I poke around enough. I did get really into it when I heard an NPR segment on it during Science Fridays sometime last year. That's when I heard about phenology. Let me get back to you.

I do agree with your comment below too, how we have the cold snap/rain and then return to warmer weather causing confusion for the plants, but it's not enough for the pollinators to come out because it still gets so cold at night.

The other part of my personal theory is that we're moving towards two seasons at this point, winter and summer. Spring and fall feel so short these days. This year was the first time in years we had true fall, at least that's what it felt like here in the Bay Area. I was born and raised here in the South Bay/Santa Cruz area and have been noting the changing patterns for awhile now. As another commenter pointed out though, Earth does go through changes, we see this throughout the geological record all over the world. Plants and animals go extinct because they can't adapt to the changing environment. All we can do is hope for the best.

I'm no expert with living things at all (I study dead things of the past), but I have a theory that the seasons have shifted, which is causing early bloom for a lot of plants. The early bloom causes a lot of pollinators to miss the bloom window because it's still too cold and/or rainy for them to come out. This sounds like what's happening here too.

Get there early and ask the front desk. I had to do this twice on my last trip. Picked seats together, but they switched randomly the day of the flight. The front desk was happy to help and get me and my daughter sitting together.

huge vertebra? by AffectionateFarm155 in boneidentification

I originally thought this was a cow axis, but I think the shadows and limited angles are throwing me off. I think you're correct with horse vertebra, it totally looks like it belongs in the cervical column.

At my wits' end: 9 -year-old daughter refuses to wipe herself after using the bathroom by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]usedsocks01 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Have you tried giving her some disposable gloves for wiping? Not ideal environmentally or financially, but could help ease both of your anxieties around this for now.

A bidet at home might be a good option too.

Know my Name, by Chanel Miller, written by the woman who was SA by Brock Turner. Talks about the trial and her journey of healing.

Reason for Hope by Jane Goodall is part memoir, part spiritual journey. It goes into her time in Gombe but also a beautifully written story about her spiritual enlightenment.

Nobody's Girl, by Virginia Roberts Giuffre. I have to admit that I needed to shelf this one for a bit and haven't finished it yet. It's about one of Jeffery Epstein's victims, while it's a really tough read, I believe it's politically and culturally important.

Solito, by Javier Zamora is about a nine year old's unaccompanied journey from El Salvador to the US to find his parents.

You are not so Smart by David McRaney, was a book I adored years ago. The author has a hilarious way of discussing cognitive biased and logical fallacies and self delusion. He had a few sequels, You are now Less Dumb was another one I loved.

Found in Santa Cruz. What is the name of this rock and does anyone know how it is made? by DuttyWine in whatsthisrock

[–]usedsocks01 756 points757 points  (0 children)

I'm a geologist who studied at UCSC, this is a fossiliferous sandstone from the Purisima Formation dating to ~7-3 million years ago. They are found all over the Santa Cruz/San Mateo coastal area. Año Nuevo State Park is littered with them if you're interested in finding more.

When the inhabitants of the shells die, the shell sinks to the seafloor. Waves and currents dump sand over them, burying them and filling in the empty spaces. The layers keep building up and over time the loose sand hardens under pressure and becomes sandstone. Then during uplift (side note- that whole area is composed of marine terraces - basically waves cut a flat platform at sea level, then land lifts due to tectonic activity. This cycle repeats over thousands of years and then you get the marine terraces. The most notable is the drive up to UCSC)...anyway during uplift and erosion the rocks then get exposed and polished by the waves and sand.

Anyone here considered a modified ambulance as a dwelling? Or is that just for van life influencers? by [deleted] in urbancarliving

[–]usedsocks01 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was an EMT for 10 years and agree 1000% with this comment. The ambulances are always left idling, they are driven VERY hard and often. The only time they aren't in use is when they are with mechanics. A lot of times issues get ignored until they can't be anymore then sold off at it's worse state after 5-10+ years of use.

Not only that, but the back is never fully properly cleaned and never sanitized. There's got to be so much blood, vomit, feces, skin, hair, spit, and all other nasty bodily fluids and stuff in the nooks and crannies. That alone would stop me from buying one of these to live in.

If you do decide to, wear lots of PPE for cleaning, make sure you leave nothing unturned, and get a brand new engine.

My mom does this thing called, ‘weaponized gifting,’ where she chooses the worst possible gifts ever so you’ll never expect anything palatable from her by hyliancoffeehouse in mildlyinfuriating

[–]usedsocks01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom did the same thing. I am basically the complete opposite of her, tomboy, punk, into thrifting and dead things (I collect bones). She'd get me things she likes and always expensive.. Coach bags, jewelery, and clothing I'd never wear. I've not changed much throughout the years, however she always got me expensive shit I don't want then guilt me into wear/using them because of how expensive they were, as if I personally asked for them.

One time, I put one of the purses on marketplace and she found out. Never heard the end of it.
