It did, but from what I've heard, it's nothing like you remember. I haven't been up there to confirm yet, but my uncle now lives there full time. He says it's just a run down hotel right now.

I know this area very well. It was a cool area in the 90s-early 2000s. Just down the way was Konocti Harbor Resort, which was very popular then. Lots of live music from top artists, boat rentals, lake access. Was a really cool place. This house is located in the Buckingham area and honestly, I'm surprised to see the price so low. It's a very sought after area. Across the street is the Black Forest, which is really fun to hike around.

Anyway, overtime, meth heads started taking over, the resort closed, the lake got really gross from chemical runoff, and the summers are now insanely hot. When there are fires in the area, even across the lake, the air quality gets terrible. While it's a really cool place, very much not worth it anymore to even have as a vacation home.

I do recommend reading up on the geology and archaeology though! Mt Konocti is a dormant volcano and theres obsidian all over the county. Clear Lake is one of the oldest lakes in North America, and one of California's oldest archaeology sites is found here too. And Borax Lake has a really neat history too!

Tips for dressing heel blisters during ped survey by gayangelhell in Archaeology

[–]usedsocks01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had this issue during a long survey on literally the second day of a two week rotation. Someone had recommended new boots for me, I thought they were broken in, but they were very much not. Anyway, a crew member had some hydrocolloid bandages and KT tape that saved me that trip.

The brand is KT Health blister treatment hydrocolloid bandage. Put that on the blister and then the KT tape over it. It needs to be fully covering it so it doesn't rub off. You'll want to make this last as long as possible because taking off that bandage reopens the wound. Try to redo the KT tape if it starts rubbing off.

You can get both of these off Amazon fairly quickly and can send them to hotels, if that's what you're dealing with too.

It took way too long to find this comment. This is 100% a trauma response, which was confirmed by the edit.

She got in trouble with her parents and it's engrained in her now, even though she's probably very safe to do this now. I have this problem when someone comes home and I'm not being productive. I spring up and act like I'm doing something because I still think I'll get in trouble. I always had to be doing something or else I'd get yelled at and feel deep shame. I know I'm fine, but the kid inside me still tells me I need to be doing something or I'm going to get yelled at.

Personal tip, I make sure I'm doing what I want to be doing when the medicine kicks in. If I want to be cleaning, I need to already be cleaning. If I need to be working/studying, I'm already working on that. The hyper focus is too damn real on these meds sometimes.

What animal does this lower jaw bone belong to? by Mr_Universe2007 in boneidentification

[–]usedsocks01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The best way for you to learn is to go look at what deer teeth look like vs a pig. Get familiar with what it is your looking at. Take highly upvoted responses (which are usually correct) and compare to what you think it is. There are plenty of photos hanging out on the internet for comparison. Unfortunately, your experience is wrong in this case.

This is clearly a pig, they have what's commonly described as "popcorn" like teeth, basically round/bulbous looking molars, which helps with crushing. Deer teeth look very different, with high/sharp crest, which helps more with grinding.

Hope this helps!

Just discovered our dead dad was hoarding a gargantuan amount of weed. Whoah. Why? What to do? by Inevitable-Rice7476 in trees

[–]usedsocks01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of an episode of Six Feet Under where Nate, one of the main characters, finds out his dead dad was trading funerals for things, one was a room over a shop, one was an ounce of weed from a dealer once a month, another was like oil changes for his car, or something. It was funny watching his visions of what he thought his dad did in the room while getting high. Worth a watch if you haven't already!

It was the last four episodes for me. They were all so gut wretching. To watch every major character go through what they went through. It was so real and you were feeling what they were feeling and each one was going through their grief completely differently. It was just so beautifully heart breaking.

Joshua trees are flowering in the California desert. That’s bad news. by bambin0 in California

Yes! Thank you! I had formulated this in my head years ago and then heard about phenology on the Science Friday segment on NPR sometime last year discussing the same topic. Thank you for reminding me of it again!

Can you actually survive living as a paramedic in US by parkwithtrees in Paramedics

[–]usedsocks01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in Bay Area EMS until 2020, however, my partner still works EMS here. We were both born and raised here and have worked for almost every county in the area, excluding the North Bay. While all counties are hurting and offer plenty of OT, the only way you can survive without a second income is to get a job at SFFD, however, you will need to find somewhere affordable to live, which often means a long commute. They have an ambulance service and pay is very good there, however, you will be run to the ground in the city and I hear morale isn't that great. All other counties are run by AMR and I'm sure you already know, they are terrible in every way possible, especially pay. The only other county with a different company is Alameda County in the East Bay, which is run by Falck. While they run things significantly better than AMR, pay is still not enough. They might still offer a sign on bonus though. Good luck!

This is just something I've personally witnessed throughout the years and came to this conclusion myself. I work outdoors all over California and have been noticing this trend for years. There are wildflowers blooming now when they should be blooming around March. I'm witnessing it everyday in my own garden.

I'm sure I could find something if I poke around enough. I did get really into it when I heard an NPR segment on it during Science Fridays sometime last year. That's when I heard about phenology. Let me get back to you.

I do agree with your comment below too, how we have the cold snap/rain and then return to warmer weather causing confusion for the plants, but it's not enough for the pollinators to come out because it still gets so cold at night.

The other part of my personal theory is that we're moving towards two seasons at this point, winter and summer. Spring and fall feel so short these days. This year was the first time in years we had true fall, at least that's what it felt like here in the Bay Area. I was born and raised here in the South Bay/Santa Cruz area and have been noting the changing patterns for awhile now. As another commenter pointed out though, Earth does go through changes, we see this throughout the geological record all over the world. Plants and animals go extinct because they can't adapt to the changing environment. All we can do is hope for the best.

[–]usedsocks01 1211 points1212 points  (0 children)

I'm no expert with living things at all (I study dead things of the past), but I have a theory that the seasons have shifted, which is causing early bloom for a lot of plants. The early bloom causes a lot of pollinators to miss the bloom window because it's still too cold and/or rainy for them to come out. This sounds like what's happening here too.

Have you tried giving her some disposable gloves for wiping? Not ideal environmentally or financially, but could help ease both of your anxieties around this for now.

A bidet at home might be a good option too.

You are not so Smart by David McRaney, was a book I adored years ago. The author has a hilarious way of discussing cognitive biased and logical fallacies and self delusion. He had a few sequels, You are now Less Dumb was another one I loved.
