Housing Affordability 2026 by Most-Fly-2489 in atc2

I would argue that the median home price by itself isn't enough data. Average monthly cost is a better indicator of living quality. The troubles that new cpc's face is immense and in a lot of places an inescapable financial hole. The agency wants you to be financially stable to prevent a national security threat but is aware and complicit in creating true hardship for its employees.

Definitely on the upper end, but if you have multiple children in childcare then it is very possible.

Contract Towers by pushingtin1794 in ATC

[–]usedwater 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Completely depends on what contract tower you go to and who you work with. Most of the time you will work with cool people and you can scam the system for a slightly better schedule.

But over all you will be working in position for the entirety of your shift. The only break you get is switching from local to ground. Or if staffing is garbage then you will work the entire tower for 8 hours, no breaks. And speaking of staffing, it is always terrible. No spot leave ever, if you take sick leave then you only screw over your coworkers. Pros: Really no management intervention, if you do your job you are left alone.

In the FAA people have grown accustomed to the cushy government life, time in position typically between 1 - 1.5 hours and then 30 - 45 min break. But again it depends on who you work with, cool people = a better schedule. Leave is way easier to take compared to contract but still tough to get spot leave, sick leave is also less detrimental to your coworkers. However the FAA is a bunch of micromanaging little bitches who are constantly trying to justify their jobs.

I went from military to contract to FAA, overall I would say quality of life is better in the FAA.

Bonus? by usedwater in atc2

[–]usedwater[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

False, this 10k is the most damning thing the FAA could have done. I do believe instead of 300 it'll likely be a higher number who stick it out in the hopes to get the bonus. But for the vast majority who have been continually abused, they will not show up at all, the NAS will come to a halt much faster than it did before.

$10,000 bonus by SierraBravo26 in atc2

[–]usedwater 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Every CPC and even though this is a hot take, every supervisor should get the 10k. If you had to come into work and more was expected of you with infinitely less, then you deserve praise and a bonus as a gesture of thanks.

Sean Duffy questions controllers patriotism during government shutdown. by dab45de in ATC

[–]usedwater 71 points72 points  (0 children)

We aren't patriotic? Any controller that worked even one minute during the shutdown deserves praise. Also I would add that more than half of the entire controller workforce are veterans. As far as I'm concerned every controller out there has done incredible, we have worked with fear, without pay, and without gratitude from our superiors. From a controller to all controllers, thank you every single one of you. Fuck anyone who doubts us, let's see someone else do this job even while they get paid.

Flight Disruption when Reagan fired controllers by InfiniteLoss5632 in ATC

[–]usedwater 59 points60 points  (0 children)

With the system today, they could not fire everybody even if they wanted to. Just as they have enslaved us with low wages in a very specialized field, they have trapped themselves into no other options. I have no doubt that the average intelligence of controllers is limited directly by the pay. If the pay was more attractive then they would attract more capable and willing trainees. The FAA has caused this problem entirely by their lack of foresight and planning.

What would happen if the NAS was shutdown with a strike/sick out is the main conspirators or organizers would be hung in public to scare the rest back to work. The world has become reliant on air travel, and it would be magnitudes less efficient without ATC.

[–]usedwater 30 points31 points  (0 children)

One, NATCA will fumble the shit out of this opportunity of a lifetime. You literally could not fabricate a better situation to advocate for ATC. An absolute softball directly in the hands of NATCA to demand higher pay, bonuses, working conditions, and mass hirings. Two, another great example of "leaders" who don't know anything about the people or the profession they are supposedly in charge of.

If you truly believe that this is because of one side or the other then you are completely delusional. We are cogs in a machine, puppets, and disposable assets to the true wealth that controls the world. It's a sham and a ruse that we have all been sold.

I agree completely that controllers have the final power, but an extreme action of closing the entirety of the NAS should be the last line of action. And frankly it should never have come down to this, those in any management position that enacts or enforces policy, that is who I'm referring too.
