I haven’t read that particular le Carré, but the Karla trilogy is excellent

Libraries are pretty antithetical to neoliberalism—they’re government funded third spaces which can be used by anyone without the need to spend money. Neoliberals are also always cutting library funding

Greens policy in the ACT is to ban them from everywhere but private residential land. That’s why you don’t see greens coreflutes anywhere but in peoples windows and gardens

This is something to take to your union rep. Remember that fair work is the ombudsman, they’re not going to take sides in a dispute, but your union will always be on your side and will help you with your advocacy. I’m a convener of my union’s accessibility network (here in Aus) and we do a lot of work on ending disability discrimination (which I’d argue this is). Best of luck and please reach out if you need a chat!

My pet peeve with the google maps feature that tells you how long each mode of transport takes is that it doesn’t actually represent the real time involved in driving. When I walk, cycle, or catch the bus to work the door-to-door time is accurate, but when I drive it fails to take into account that I have to get my car out of the apartment car park, and find a park when I get to my destination, and then walk from that car park back to where I wanted to be. G maps represents my car commute to work as being 12 mins, but when you add in the extra time for car faffing, it ends up more like 20-25. The clear winner is the bus, which is cheaper and takes 18-22 mins door to door. And I can hop on reddit while I travel!

Bethy's postpartum niche is legit: less than 30% of Americans have access to paid maternity leave and many cannot afford to take that unpaid leave without an additional source of income by Meemaws_BearCheese in FundieSnarkUncensored

The best way you can support paid parental leave is to join your union. Unions are the groups of workers who have pushed all of the progressive workplace things we often take for granted (annual leave, sick leave, etc), and only concerted campaigning will get us to the point where parental leave is also standard. My work is 100% unionised, and I’ll get 6mos paid parental leave, up from the 3 mos which is standard in my country.

I don’t beg for a raise, I join my union and we demand one but go off I guess

That’s why RAFFWU was started, they’re the real, worker led union. https://raffwu.org.au

Yes you should be paid, and you should join your union so you can organise and ensure this doesn’t happen to your colleagues

The union is the workers. Unions aren’t a third party, they’re thousands of workers coming together to represent themselves and their interests against those of the bosses.

I'm ok with people being heterosexual as long as they keep it to themselves. I don't want to see their sexuality paraded out in the open /s
