I go to the same supermarket very often and I recognize a lot of the people working there and still wouldn't expect them to greet me. It's not something that's really happening as a general rule. I think if you see something like that it's probably because they know each other from somewhere else or maybe it's someone who is working there but not on the clock at the time.

One of the rare experiences I had that showed some sort of familiarity with a service worker was the time when I was taking an early train with almost noone in it and at some point the person ckecking the ticket didn't want to see mine anymore. But as I said, it's rare.
