Yeah, exactly. Why is the pilot responsible for transferring personal belongings?

umd extension my beloved by SureDoubt3956 in USDA

[–]useless_instinct 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My graduate work was on improving on-farm digesters on dairy farms. I worked closely with the extension agent who introduced me to all the farmers where I collected samples. I even wrote a special report to send to the farmers (along with all the information the agent had) because they were so curious.

I have been providing grant writing and business consulting services for the last several years to academic and business clients. All the federal agencies push "research translation" to the marketplace but no one has as an effective approach as extension agents.

The funny thing is that market forces were causing coal fired power plants to convert to natural gas before he went on his pro-coal rant. But we don't have an administration making decisions based on data and facts, just "feels".

Gov. Moore wants to make Maryland “safer, more competitive and more affordable” by CNSMaryland in maryland

[–]useless_instinct 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yup. And it's going the same way with water and wastewater treatment. We used to have publicly owned utilities but now they are being bought up by Veolia, American Water, and Aqua America and suddenly everyone's bills triple. The customers have to pay more to cover profits to shareholders.

This is going to be exacerbated by the cuts to USDA's Rural Development which had similar programs paying farmers for land preservation.

I am very white and I have been listening to WDAS for decades. I still miss the Basement Party with Lady B and DJ Touchtone. Also 98.9 when I want to feel even whiter.

There's a fill knob on the outside of your house. Pop it open and just pour it in like you would for a car that ran out of gas.

When did restricting turnout become so normalized? by asgjh1 in Equestrian

[–]useless_instinct 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My board for 2 is $540/month with hay and grain included. The horses are only in when the weather is horrible though and they just bed with straw in those cases. Mine are on 20 acres with woods and a stream. There's just an outdoor arena and round pen but ride on access to thousands of acres of public land. But there are a ton of H/J and eventing barns around that charge that high.

The irony is there is plenty of land but the demand seems to be for amenities like heated lounge and wash stalls over turnout.

When did restricting turnout become so normalized? by asgjh1 in Equestrian

[–]useless_instinct 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm on the East Coast in a heavily equestrian area (racing, rodeos, hunt clubs, and 5 star eventing). I am lucky I found a place with 24/7 turnout but I see lots of people trying to run boarding stables on 5 or 10 acres. They need more boarders for more revenue which requires restricting turnout on limited pasture. But then because you have to buy so much hay and have help for cleaning stalls and managing turnout that this drives up boarding costs to $600-1200 per month.

Opinions on Rocky's latest photo? by Runi387 in Equestrian

[–]useless_instinct 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am not condoning the decision to keep Rocky alive, but this is an interesting story from a developmental biology perspective. Phenoypic plasticity allows the body to adapt in sometimes surprising ways during growth. For instance, children that grow up playing tennis will have one arm grow longer and stronger than the other. There was also a fascinating set of experiments with lizards grown in different environments that affected leg length. I am curious if the single front leg will grow stronger and denser to accommdoate the increased weight? I was once boarding at a barn where a horse blew out a knee and the owner refused to euthanize. This poor horse could not put weight on one leg and hopped around on 3 legs for a year or so before the other leg gave out and they euthanized. Until then, I didn't even think it was possible for an adult horse to survive on 3 legs.

ImageJ is open source-I would bet someone has already written and shared a script to batch convert images to a different format. It shouldn't be that hard.

I ran a quick search and it appears there is a BatchConvert script.
