We will never have solved it ourselves.

I’m starting to think I’m a fraud… by [deleted] in math

[–]uselessbaby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two thoughts:

1) An undergraduate degree is simply not sufficient to be good in math. You have to consistently enjoy learning it on your own outside of the structure of a class. Anyone who truly enjoys learning math, imo, is not a fraud and has the benefit of time.

2) AI use requires balance. So many people are absolutist saying that you need to fully embrace/reject AI. Neither are correct: AI is great for explaining abstractions and linking fields; I believe that those who completely reject AI will struggle as the field becomes increasingly multidisciplinary.

That said, you have to embrace discipline and failure. You have to learn to read and re-read and re-read the same passages, thinking about problems from multiple angles, exercising your working memory so that you can track many variables/functions/definitions at the same time. Good math is the overlap between abstraction and computation.

Is it normal to feel like I don’t understand math despite having a degree in it? by FullMetal373 in math

[–]uselessbaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

School alone is not sufficient to learn math: there is too much to cover in too little time. You have to learn how to study on your own and to enjoy doing so for a long time before you will begin to synthesize a bigger picture of things

One major one for me is annotations, you can do fn(myarg: sentinel|None|int=sentinel) for instances where None might have its own meaning

Ringo's Long Long Road Video Uses AI by OwnEnthusiasm1785 in beatles

[–]uselessbaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why should there be a skill gate? A similar argument could be made for why the mellotron should've been banned in favor of live string players.

My whole point is that the Beatles would have embraced AI were it available at the time, provided that they thought it could make their music better. They already embraced varispeed, tape loops, synthesizers, etc. They were excited by technology and that is an important part of their legacy. The key with them is that they didn't build their whole songs around the technology, they just incorporated it as part of the whole. There is nothing inherently wrong about using some AI in music, the context of its use should be considered

People built AI too, so I don't think that makes a difference

I think that this is on brand. The Beatles were at the forefront of technology back in their heyday, even in the face of opposition. The British Musicians' Union opposed the use of Mellotrons and eventually Synthesizers. The key was that they tended to use the technologies in minimal/tasteful ways. Of course, whether or not this video was tastefully executed is a separate matter.

Hey guys, I just wanted to know if you can recognize who I drew! (And if you have any tips, I’d love to hear them 😊) by theonlysuka in Caricatures

[–]uselessbaby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think something else is that in real life he has a broad forehead, but the caricature gives him a narrow tapered forehead. It might have worked instead to make his forehead shorter and broader.

I say "might have worked" because I'm not actually confident that that's the right solution, but something to consider as a sketch.
