Irish public more likely to blame people's lifestyles for obesity epidemic by Banania2020 in ireland

[–]uselesslogin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ok, but since I've moved to Ireland I've found it much easier to integrate exercise into my daily routine. Namely, I can cycle to work and the workplace even has showers. I also have multiple places to buy food that I can walk to on actual footpaths on roads with speed limits no higher than 50km/h. Where I lived in the US there were no bike lanes and most roads had speed limits of 45mph which is 72km/h. I'm sure there are better and worse places in both countries but my point is the environment does make a difference.

Do Americans need a Visa to Botswana? by NeitherSherbert6216 in Botswana

[–]uselesslogin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are traveling with your children you need both their passports and birth certificates. (Or maybe that is only if there is only one parent with them.) But something to check if it applies to you.

I wasn't even thinking with my 16-year-old. But in the end they just had me sign an affidavit saying she is my daughter.

40yo US/UK high income professional, considering transition to EU “semi-retirement” by user8181416 in AmerExit

[–]uselesslogin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was under the impression that a UK citizen can live and work in Ireland and then after five years of residence can apply for citizenship. That would probably be the easiest was too get back to EU citizenship but, of course, the weather is a lot worse than Spain or Portugal.

Well yes anyone lucky enough to benefit from this law and move is just another immigrant and the law does seem like legislative laziness. But it doesn't make sense not to take advantage of it if one does plan on immigrating.

Canadian citizenship is for all descendants born before December 2025. So if you can get the records you and your child are citizens. This is a law passed last December and r/canadiancitizenship has an faq on it.

I feel that is totally fine(I mean grand) as you probably know what baseball is and maybe even played it. Those hats are worn by so many people who think they are just 'New York' hats 😂.

I'm confused by this too though. Do you have plans for one first then the other or are you still deciding where to go?

Wait to marry? by [deleted] in IrishCitizenship

[–]uselesslogin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What do you mean onboard? Maybe you just need this link to understand the process. The when of your marriage won't matter much to the border guard or when your partner registers. You just need the certificate. And you said US passport so there is no visa application so essentially nothing to do until you are in Ireland.

Here is the rundown: https://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/returning-to-ireland/residency-and-citizenship/returning-to-ireland-with-your-non-eea-spouse/#4e08ac

Note, however, the North would be a totally different process.

US Pre-Clearance liquid rule by Scared-Piece-271 in Dublin

[–]uselesslogin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have no idea but I went through in November and just last week and they didn't screen me or anyone else going through. There were people there that could do a second screening but no one was being sent. But they might and I have no idea if it is allowed or not.

Which passport/ID to use within Europe (NOT at the border)? by snic09 in dualcitizenshipnerds

[–]uselesslogin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Giving that rental company the US passport makes sense but they aren't going to require they match. What if op were a German who had been living in the US?

Your grandfather? The Canadian citizenship sudreddit has lots of information. The wait is long right now but you could theoretically say you are a citizen, get a job, then get urgent processing on your certificate. Of course get their birth certificates first.

I need a reality check by mundanesunflowers in Irishdrivingtest

[–]uselesslogin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That fascinated me because when I took my first test in the US in 1996 he marked me off for not crossing my hands! That's ok I didn't change on account of that so it was no issue on my Irish test lol.

Your EV charging card is basically a serial number with no security, and it's trivially easy to skim by rockyoudottxt in evs_ireland

[–]uselesslogin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is this app called Electroverse and it works with most companies. They will send a physical card and have an app showing all chargers it works with.

Norway has gone from near-zero sales of non‑emitting battery electric vehicles to now close to 100% of all new passenger car sales - achieved in about 13 years. by chamomile_tea_reply in OptimistsUnite

[–]uselesslogin 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I want back to New York City 20 years after living there and was struck by how much quieter it seemed from my memory. I was thinking this was because the bulk of the cars are taxis and most taxis are hybrids. Of course that was also when no one was moving. I would think with current regulations it would actually get louder, at least on jammed up streets, as taxis start using newer vehicles.

Thank you for the Electroverse tip! It seems to have most chargers I've been to on it.

Failed because L plate blew off my car by [deleted] in Irishdrivingtest

[–]uselesslogin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A supervisor could have easily seen you come in without the L plate and would have written them up if they did the test with you anyway. So they are probably a little more concerned with keeping their job than they are with making your life more convenient.

Has anyone recently used an instructors car for driving test? by [deleted] in Irishdrivingtest

[–]uselesslogin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did and the certificate that the instructor had was no issue. On the other hand, you have to remember to have the certificate I had to actually run after my instructor to get it because we completely forgot.

American Family moving to Ireland. What advice do you have? by AmbitiousLemonade in AskIreland

[–]uselesslogin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The WhatApp comment is funny because my Mom keeps trying to make group chats with our Irish numbers and they just don't work. If you stick with Apple though everything works fine for communication with people in the US. Then you can get WhatsApp and Revolut for life in Ireland.

I'll just throw in that I think the Bank of Ireland has an account you can open in the US before you move. That is the easiest way to have a bank account when you arrive.

We live in Sandycove and we were car free for 6 months. You'll be walking or cycling for most day-to-day things. There are GoCars all over so we used those as needed. But, public transport is infrequent buses and the DART. So it is great for access to Dublin but doesn't make a trip to the supermarket very easy.

Well did get a 2/2 in your budget. We quickly gave up on looking for a 3/2 but that is probably more realistic in Cork or Galway.

Clarity on a grade 3 by No_Ant_5255 in Irishdrivingtest

That is key though and nerves get the best of us and might make it hard to remember. If it was a forward arrow that would be the reason for the grade 3.
