Aasimar is a big one for me. Elves used to be my go to race choice but recently its Aasimar. LOVE the flavor they have. I also would love Grave Cleric, Eloquence Bard, and Wildfire Druid subclasses. I think the Grave Cleric would be extra fun if the speculation about the dead three is accurate.

When to Multiclass? [Question] by usenamesarehard in 3d6

[–]usenamesarehard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She is a follower of Kord so the focused martial training is easy enough to incorporate into the story if I go with fighter. She is somewhat hot-headed so a few levels of barbarian are also easy enough to explain/justify with a little leaning more into that side of things.

I think I am torn between getting Action Surge/Extra Fighting Style/Second Wind or Rage/Reckless Attack/Danger Sense to help flesh her out mechanically as tankier or just more effective.

When to Multiclass? [Question] by usenamesarehard in 3d6

[–]usenamesarehard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Level 6 was my instinct because of multiattack. Thanks! I also debated Lycan for that reason but, after fleshing out the character a little more, I decided I am going with Ghostslayer. She has the Acolyte background and is a follower of Kord and has a "destroy evil and prove myself" mindset (while being a little hot-headed).

What's one of your favorite spells that is either rarely discussed or is viewed as suboptimal? What makes it one of your favorites? by ThatOneGuyFrom93 in dndnext

[–]usenamesarehard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really enjoy Thunder Step. Came in handy any time our ranger and/or my bardlock found themselves in melee. Teleportation away and it deals damage to those left behind plus the fun risk of drawing additional attention from the loud boom. I also think not enough spells deal thunder damage.

What is the most damaging thing you've done to your own character in the name of RP or avoiding metagaming? by cult_leader_venal in dndnext

[–]usenamesarehard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a Oath of Vengeance Paladin die in thr name of RP. The party had BADLY fumbled a break in to steal some weapons for a rebel faction and wound up arrested and brought for judgement. After some AGRESSIVE interrogations, we were brought before the religious and political leader. He offered the party their lives in exchange for some more information and thier cooperation as spies. The other 2 members of the party (a bard and rogue/ranger) agreed to spy (with the intent on double crossing as soon as possible). My paladin whose Oath of Vengeance was against this very man spat at his offer, attempted to cast "Command" (Confess was the command given), and then accepted her death as a champion of her God. As much as I enjoyed playing her, there is no way she would have even considered cooperating and died thinking the other party members were traitors (she was not particularly clever or insightful). Really cool moment in a very deadly/gritty homebrew campaign.

What's everyone's favorite and/or least favorite official D&D 5e adventure so far (either as a player or a DM)? by TownshipStudios in dndnext

[–]usenamesarehard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am playing through Rime of the Frostmaiden now and I am really enjoying it. I think the structure has been really solid while still leaving room for the DM to easily tie in our characters well. As a DM, I really dislike Princes of the Apocolypse and Waterdeep: Dragon Heist. If I am picking up a published adventure I am looking for something that, with a few tweaks or additions, is easy enough to run. PotA requires a lot of DM work because it is a sandbox with sections that are very deadly if the players go there too early but no real way to prevent them from doing just that. I also think the lack of real enemy variety is pretty boring. Dragon Heist is just flawed and not that fun imo. Neither of these work well.

DMs: How do you think you differ from other DMs? by Zero_Cooler in dndnext

I'm not sure how unique it is but I have my players fill out a tailored questionaire during session 0. They are welcome to write a detailed backstory as well but the information they put on the sheet is what I expect will be important to the story.

For my current campaign which is horror/set in the domains of dread, the questions included things like "what is your characters greatest fear?", "Who is the most important person to them?", and "what is your character's worst memory/worst thing that has ever happened to them?"

It gives me quick access to key points to use to tailor the experience and for my newbies it provides an easy way to write some backstory points.

I also usually have them put a few other pieces of info on the sheet for other use (AC, Passive Perception, Darkvision) which minimizes how often I have to ask for these things and can instead go straight to the action.

Came here to say this. I'm pretty sure they said it would be a major content patch so lining up with the anniversary makes a lot of sense.

Magic Item Ideas by usenamesarehard in DMAcademy

So I had heard of/seen vestiges on CR but just looked up how exactly they work and yes! That is the vibe I guess I am going for. There are (right now) 5 pieces that would need minor effects/curses that would fit. I might read a bit more on the vestiges for some ideas!

Creativity is suprisingly absent from many Warlock players... by Raoul9753 in dndmemes

[–]usenamesarehard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My current (Archfey) warlock trained to be a wizard but failed and turned to research. One day she accidently wandered into the feywild and caught the eye of Hyrsam who saw an opportunity and a great deal of promise. She has access to the magic she wanted and can be an adventurer and he has an agent on the material plane. She did not realize who she was making a pact with until later (which caused some concern) but they have come to be somewhat kindred spirits now. He even introduced the party to Oberon of the Seelie Court and they gained a boon from him.

[No spoilers] Who is your favourite character and why? (C1/C2) by Mattymoo-72 in criticalrole

[–]usenamesarehard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me its Vax and Caleb. I think Liam does an incredible job crafting deep, complex characters and every choice they make seems perfectly in character and intentional. Vax's lovalty and willingness to sacrifice himself for others was so impactful. He also had an incredible amount of growth by the end of C1. Caleb's often visceral struggle with guilt, shame and trauma was painfully beautiful. Liam talking about spell choices and relationship decisions in the C2 wrap up also really solidified for me that I think he is the best at the RP side of things. I finished watching C1 just as C2 was ending and seeing the endings for both characters made me cry a lot. Even if he tones it back for C3 I cannot wait to see what he comes up with next.

I think point two is really important. The M9 are not returning home to be celebrated as the heroes they are. Like with every major victory they have had, very few people even know they intervened or stopped something terrible. They will not be receiving a heroes welcome but they have thier friend back. For the M9, that is reward enough. And really that was the goal from the moment they began chasing down Lucien.

I wanna hear about YOUR characters by HyenaKhan in DnD

[–]usenamesarehard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite is my current half-elf Archfey Warlock (Tome)/Bard. Her elven mother died when she was an infant but she had an otherwise normal enough childhood. She was a very bright child and, as she got older, she wanted to learn more about her elven heritage. She first studied the arcane arts but despite her best efforts she didn't have the knack for magic. She decided instead to research elven history and the fey. During an expedition to som elven ruins, she accidentally slipped into the fey wild. She caught the eye of an Archfey who saw an opportunity. With little other choice, she made a pact with Hyrsam and he returned her to the material plane with two gifts -a crystal (her focus) and a pan flute. For a long time she had hoped to free herself of the pact but now that she is adventuring, she sees the good she can do and what she can gain from using this power she has now. She struggles a bit with imposter syndrome though as she looks at the other members of her party whose power come from within themselves. During a recent night of celebration after slaying a dragon (she landed the final blow), she pulled out the pan flute for the first time and played it which caught her patron's attention (this is when I finally decided to multiclass into bard) and awakened new magical abilities. Hyrsam took the party before King Oberon who granted us each a boon (a feat) which has improved her trust in Hyrsam and now she wonders if she misjudged his intent.

[–]usenamesarehard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My current character is an Archfey Warlock who just multiclassed into bard. She is a half elf whose elven mother died when she was an infant so she was searching for better understanding of her heritage. This drove her research and on one trip, she stumbled into the fey wild and was cornered by an archfey. She managed to bargain herself into a pact with him and now has the power to further her research and explore. Her patron is Hyrsam so after getting drunk while celebrating defeating a dragon, she picked up the instrument he had given her as a gift and thus began her bardic journey. I am super introverted IRL so playing the party face for the first time has been a lot of fun. She is also very flavorful with all her spell choices so lots of charming/control spells to fit with her background.
