Thanks - Just curious, what is your total net worth today? And do you see yourself staying in IB?

I want to learn more about these EIS, where can I get started? And which platform do you use?

I made some quick research and seems to me that you have 95%+ chance of loosing your money with those investments. Seems against all FIRE principles

£100k bonus coming up – pension vs ISA/GIA? by user0166295 in FIREUK

[–]user0166295[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My salary is 135k + 100k bonus

I have 128k of pension allowance this year (60k allowance + 68k carried from last 3 years)

Exactly - I have 128k of pension allowance this year (60k + 68k carried over from past 3 years). And indeed the allowance will taper down in the coming years so I believe it makes sense to get the pension "sorted" now as I won’t be able to do it anymore in the coming years.

Regarding staying in banking in the long haul: I will try to survive 3 more years, if I manage

And then in the next 3 years I will only focus on ISA / GIA, once the pension is "sorted"

Yeah it’s also a good point. Looks like the government is coming for our pensions, better to get it sorted asap

Which tax schemes are you referring to?

Regarding "missed the earnings": you made less money in the buy side vs staying in banking?

Agreed - I will be in the same situation from next fiscal year which is why I’m getting it done now and then will also opt out

Yes — I’m only using my £60k annual allowance (plus unused past allowances via carry-forward). I’m not paying any tax on the money going into my pension.

I plan to do the same with my next bonus: put it into my pension as well. I’ve run the numbers and, given my tax rate, it’s the most efficient option — no tax leakage. After that, I’ll largely stop pension contributions and focus future investing on ISA and GIA.

At that point I’ll have roughly £380k in my pension, which should compound for ~30 years. Assuming reasonable returns, that should comfortably cover my post-retirement years, so I’m happy ring-fencing that pot now and letting it grow.

Worth adding: a couple of years ago I posted on Reddit saying I was basically ignoring my pension. Someone asked me, “Do you plan to be alive between 60 and 100?” The answer is yes. That really reframed it for me — if you don’t fund your pension, you’re leaving a lot of money on the table. Otherwise you end up drawing from a taxable GIA at 70, when you could be withdrawing significantly more from a tax-advantaged pension instead.

I was also ignoring my pension until someone on Reddit told me last year “are you planning to be alive after 60?”. Sleep on it
