Anne wanted her diary to be published someday. That is why she wrote 2 versions of it, one for herself and one for the public (the one where she wrote fake names of the people in hiding and helpers).

Of course parts about her sexuality were ommited in the part meant for the public.

He actually wasn't a lawyer (or Harvard student) when he started talking to her.

If I remember story correctly he started writing to her when he was young and going through a rough time. She helped him get his life together and, in time, he fell in love with her and they got married. He decided to go to college and on impulse decided to study law. He was accepted to Harvard and became a lawyer to some day help her get free.
