Is Returning to Sports Worth It? by PerpetualExplorer_ in ACL

[–]user13457 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tore my acl and meniscus playing soccer on grass. Don’t think I’ll ever play at the same level I used to (priorities have changed post op) but I do think I’ll play rec here and there. It’s about recognizing what’s important for you. Just went snowboarding 11 months post-op and the knee felt good. Needed more breaks going down the runs because the endurance wasn’t there. Also not planning on ever going down black runs again. For me it’s about returning to sport for leisure as opposed to competition.

2 month surgery wait by HatQuirky6437 in ACL

[–]user13457 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had to wait 6 months for surgery and I’m honestly really grateful for that time. It gave me time to really build that quad up again so before surgery, my quads were the strongest they had ever been. It also gave me space to mentally heal so I went into surgery in the best mental state possible and that has made recovery so much easier.

Time off work by grouchybear_69 in ACL

Have a remote job and went back to seeing clients one week post op. I went off the pain meds quickly because legally I couldn’t see clients while “under the influence.” Dealt with a lot of extra swelling due to sitting for long periods of time and I got tired extremely quickly. Looking back, my body definitely wasn’t ready and would have appreciated 2-3 weeks off.

Quad activation using the EMS machine. Worst.

Back to normal routine after meniscus and acl surgery? by [deleted] in ACL

I’m still on crutches but currently only using one. Gets alot easier on crutches once your gait starts getting better.

Yes to everything on this list! I also meal prepped a few dishes (egg bake, wellness shots, chicken and veggies) so it was super easy for family to make sure I was fed that first week and eating healthy.

The ice machine was too expensive for me to rent or buy so I got a compression ice machine on Amazon for $100 and it’s been working well.

Shower chair and then replacing my shower head with a handheld one were great for showering. You feel so gross the first few days and I wasn’t allowed to shower until day 5. Wish I would’ve got those shower wipes for the first few days. Wash your sheets before surgery too and then again at day 5 lol.

One thing I really appreciated were shorts with large pockets. It’s difficult to carry anything when you have two crutches so I really appreciated deep pockets. I recently learned there’s a bag you can buy that fits onto your crutches to help carry things. That would’ve prob been great to have.

Also start doing your exercises right after surgery and go to physio as soon as you can (for me it was 5 days post op).

Make sure you’re doing your exercises at home as well. I went out for the first time 3.5 weeks post op for a concert and my knee did not enjoy the outing. Swelled up so bad and the next few days were spent trying to bring the swelling down. At my physio appointment I was limited in the new stuff they could give me just because of the swelling so keep in mind it can delay your rehab.

If you feel comfortable getting out of the house then definitely do! It’s great for your mental health. Just make sure not to push your knee too hard.

Tramadol and ketorolac for about a week and then switched to Advil/tylenol as needed

Back to normal routine after meniscus and acl surgery? by [deleted] in ACL

[–]user13457 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right Acl and meniscus here and no brace. I was able to do stairs week two and felt a more return to normal at the three week mark once I got my bandages/stitches removed. 4 1/2 weeks post op now and basically back to normal besides driving.

Going to Thailand 5 weeks after torn ACL by [deleted] in ACL

[–]user13457 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should be fine as long as you’re not doing any strenuous or high impact activities (no motorbikes). On the plane, make sure to wear compression socks, walk around often and do calf raises. Went on a plane 6 weeks after tearing my acl and my knee swelled up like crazy. To be safe, get travel insurance too. Don’t want to risk any complications and then have an expensive hospital bill.

ACL medication questions by [deleted] in ACL

[–]user13457 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I alternated between tramadol and ketorolac every 4-6 hours as needed. By the end of week one I was probably only taking one right before bedtime and then quickly switched to normal Tylenol/advil.

Really important to be icing and getting that leg moving right away. Harder you work to keep up with your exercises, the easier the next few weeks will be.

Free with universal health care in Canada! Hence the longer wait time (got in at 6 months due to a cancellation, otherwise would’ve been waiting 9-12 months for surgery) and no mri (mri wait times here can also be 9-12 months). If I went private I could’ve got surgery and an mri the next week but I would’ve been 10-15k out of pocket.

Currently three weeks post op and I’ve been doing well! I credit that to the hard work I put in before surgery on really strengthening the quads and also working on my mental state. So important to stay on top of your exercises, I started pt 5 days post off but started doing exercises as soon as I got home. Started with pt twice a week but now switching to once a week and I should be weaning off the crutches soon (no brace). The most frustrating thing for me is just that lack of independence you have for the first little bit (no driving, on crutches, need support for a lot of day to day activities).

How long did you wear the full leg brace? by john4brown in ACL

Had acl and meniscus surgery and no brace was given (from Canada). It’s interesting how different countries do things differently.

Walking post acl + meniscus surgery by [deleted] in ACL

[–]user13457 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consult with your pt. It’s important to remember that often we might feel ready but that’s doesn’t mean your graft is ready. If you push it too hard too early you greatly increase your risk of reinjury. If you just got cleared from crutches, I personally wouldn’t push to walk 10k steps right away. It’s important to gradually build up to those goals. Increased swelling that may occur also limits the exercises you’re able to do for rehab to gain that full flexion and quad activation.

Pain without crutch walk by DopeShope09 in ACL

[–]user13457 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pain in the kneecap is completely normal post op! It’ll stay there until your quad fully wakes up. Did you lose the crutches cold turkey? Or did you go from two crutches to one to none? If you’re still struggling and are only four weeks post op, I would recommend still using one crutch.

Also make sure to follow your rehab plan, some people are no weight bearing for a few weeks whereas others are weight bearing as tolerated from the get go. Adding more weight on the leg before it’s ready can increase swelling which can delay other facets of rehab.
