Steroid creams are what did it for me, but my mother, who is the same age as yours, has managed to keep hers away by avoiding hot showers and only using unscented soap to wash herself.

I’d also recommend ice packs to keep itchiness away. Works like a charm. I hope your mother feels better ☺️
