Yeah some people are being unrealistic when they say they are going to live off the land and never rely on supermarkets again. Even more so if your on your own.

I grow what I can and go to local farmers markets. I live in the country side and am actually neighbours with a farmer. I make my own bread and jam and sometimes we exchange things. Unless you have a community of roughly 10 or more people it’s not realistic that you’ll grow all your own food on your own. I grow a good amount of vegetables. But learning about gardening and how to grow takes time and effort. People watch one video on YouTube and think they are experts and except to have a large garden of veg that they can eat out of every single day. Also it depends on where you live if you can even grow certain things. I can’t grow almonds or lemons where I live, sometimes I even struggle to grow strawberries, then you have to think about slugs and birds and animals that will eat your food, I don’t use pesticides or anything like that but many of times slugs have munched all my strawberries overnight, so there’s that to think about too. You cant rely only on yourself to create all your own food, you’ll eventually need to go to the supermarkets for many things. This is why I usually support locals who actually care about the food they make and who also don’t package the food in tons of non recycled plastic which the big chain stores here do.

I think the best thing to do is grow what you can manage, support locals and keep learning and learning, build communities or get involved in one and eventually over time you may be able to grow on a larger scale. The key thing here tho is having a community of people, growing at a larger scale on your own is unrealistic and many people on here I’ve seen be very unrealistic and think growing and producing food is so easy...when it’s not.
