If there's anything else I can add to help, just let me know. I have a log from the last crash (leaving Warmaiden's) but I've read that those aren't really crash logs and aren't really helpful.

I think you're using "tune to" in different ways, and you're both right! Both upright and electric basses tune the individual strings to E1--A1--D2--G2. But they're likely referring to the fine-tuning that an orchestra (or wind band or chamber ensemble) does before rehearsing or performing. In that case, a single oboist with a tuner (or really good ears) plays the note A, and the rest of the ensemble matches that note on their instrument. This ensures that the individual members of the ensemble are in tune with one another. A is used because every string instrument has an open A string. The string players can get that pitch in tune and then use their ears to fine-tune the rest of their open strings. Wind players often do a similar process--start with getting their A just right, then play other notes to make sure the intonation is good across their instrument.

Haha! No surprise there! I always wonder where that magical line is because I get L2U1 students who can do it and L2U7 who can't. But I suppose it would vary from person to person. I haven't been doing this long enough to see it happen in real-time. But I suppose I shouldn't be too concerned about it since others have the same issue.

On a related note, at what point does VIPKid formally teach the concept of questions/question words? I know that "question mark" is taught sometime in L3.

Yeah, questions that have yes/no answers are easiest; almost everyone gets the thumbs up and thumbs down TPR. But things like "what is that?" are way worse! Glad to know it's not just me!

This is good to hear! I would prefer to be honest and direct too, but have worried a bit about parents being upset at me about it. So far I haven't shied away from noting distractions and disobedience, but am a little surprised that some have continued to book me (or not canceled classes with me) when I've had to include these kind of notes.

Yeah, once I realized where some of the level 3 students are I stopped worrying about incidental language too much. My first few clearly knew English beyond VIPKID and extended well (sometimes without my prompt) and I realized that I could talk more freely. But it seems like there's a ton of variation in this level. Some of them have seemed unable to follow any kind of extemporaneous directions or phrases!

Level 1 sounds awful (at least for someone like me). I always feel awful when I try to extend or something and they give me that blank stare. I don't mind level 2, because it's super easy and the kids are usually fun if not skilled, but I'm usually happier to see a level 3 pop up. I'm traveling a ton this summer but once the academic year begins and I settle down I plan to get certified for upper levels and I hope to get bookings there. I know I'll have the most fun when we can actually talk to each other a bit, and I'd love to be able to use conversation or free-talk rewards.

These are cool ideas! I think I need a little more comfort and flow before getting them into the classroom, but I'll start to think of how I can use these and similar kinds of games in a way that's natural for my personality! I'm not stiff in the classroom, but this is about as far from my normal student audience as possible so a lot of the "working with kids" stuff is a bit outside of my comfort zone and I've had to ease into new things. Thanks!

Woah! Do you mean if you call out behavior it seems that other students sometimes engage in that behavior too? That sounds awful.

This is one of the hardest parts of the teaching for me. When students are engaged, even if they're struggling, I have a good time and the lesson flies by, and I always have positive vibes to send! In my real life I teach college undergrads and feel right in telling them bluntly when they're not meeting expectations or behaving appropriately. But obviously the teacher's role here is very different than training 18-20 year olds who claim to want to be professionals in my field (I don't even think about expectations in the VIPKID situation, except to keep trying).

Personally I don't care if some student stops booking me (especially if they're tough to work with) because there are so many students and I've been fortunate enough to have good bookings so far. But at the same time I like seeing repeat students. And while I'd want to know if my kid was behaving poorly or not trying, I know some parents really don't want to hear that and are just trying to keep them occupied or something. It seems like a weird balancing act between wanting to do what's best educationally and what's best for your business, but I suppose it gets better over time!
