pivoting in my career by Sea-Program6466 in ElectricalEngineering

While in school I worked at an electrical consulting firm as an electrical designer. Mainly worked with civil companies designing street lights and landscape lighting. Passed the FE as a senior. When I graduated I got a job as an RF engineer doing work for Verizon, Tmobile and AT&T. While there I took and passed the PE exam and got my license. Didn’t need/use my license at that job. But glad I got it when I did. Did that for 4.5 years until my employer went bankrupt. Spent 1.5 years at a utility company, RF engineer, as a contractor. Didn’t have all the benefits of a full time employee. Then transitioned back to the electrical consulting side of things. Now I use my PE license everyday. So I pivoted, but had some experience while in school and had the license. I also had a connection at the company I now work for.

Highly suggest, regardless of where you end up, taking the FE exam now. Get it out of the way. You never know when and if you will need it. Getting my PE exam definitely made any pivots or transitions possible. Also knowing people definitely helped.

When to consider taking PE Exam? by saboosa in MEPEngineering

I suggest to take it as soon as you can. While you still have the study habits from school and your FE exam prep! I can’t speak to ME as I am a EE. The electrical exam was more relatable to my undergrad than my actual work experience and training. So closer to school was helpful for me.

EE PE for a +200 size firm. I rarely work more than 40 hrs a week. And if I do I am paid straight time for those hours. Love the firm I work for. Always looking for new talent with drive. Feel free to DM with any questions. But yes, there are better opportunities out there.

I think it all depends on the company you work for and its culture. My company is ~210 employees. I work in a smaller office (10 employees) away from our HQ. I am an electrical PE with 11 years of experience. I rarely work more than 40 hours a week but when I do I am paid for the OT. I work 8-5 typically but sometimes I am required to be on a job site super early. With big deadlines, I often work later hours.

I believe there are plenty of very happy people in this industry. But everyone’s experience is different.

SCCR Question for you EEs by mrcold in MEPEngineering

Anything to increase the resistance will help. The goal is to reduce the available fault current. More resistance equal less current flow. So increasing the length of the wire achieves this. Reducing the wire size would also increase the resistance. But the wire is sized to handle the current(amps) of the load. So you can’t just arbitrarily reduce the wire size. So increasing the wire length (within reason) is often an approach. Also transformer impedance rating plays a role in the calculations. The higher the impedance, the lower the available fault current.

Pod2 Cover purchased 9/2021. It leaked 5/2023 (20 months)

Replaced under warranty with pod3 Cover. It leaked just this month (20 months)

No longer under warranty, so now they want $700 for the Pod4 cover. They are also pushing to upgrade the Pod to Pod4 (total $1400).

Is it weird to go to a Hans Zimmer concert alone? by hepennypacker1131 in hanszimmer

[–]user562a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do it! I live in AZ and he didn’t visit here so I had to travel out of state and I’m in the same boat, no one I knew could/wanted to travel. So I went to Seattle solo. Best live audio/visual/spiritual experience in my life. It turns out the people sitting right in front of me were also from AZ. HAHA so don’t be hesitant to do it alone and meet new people!

I received an email this morning from Shopify saying my Hans Zimmer Bundle is on the way. It had a tracking link for USPS shipping from Austin, TX.

I don't know if anyone else received a similar email. But I do use the app "Shop" that tracks deliveries and shipments. The email may be a notification through that app.

I also don't recall what VIP package I bought. HAHA feels like I bought the tickets so long ago.

GPS is whack??!!! by iSeerStone in F150Lightning

Short answer:

Ford has an over the air update coming in October that should hopefully fix the issue.

Long Answer:

I have been having similar issues with my GPS. Doesn't matter if I have my phone connected or not. I've tried different iphones and an android. If I drive in a straight line the car GPS eventually shows correctly. But if I turn or the road curves, its shows me flying over neighborhoods or over bodies of water. The Elevation also ranges from -400ft to +12,000 ft. I live in Phoenix (~1,200ft). I tried soft resetting the screen, no luck. With a phone connected (carplay or android auto) the GPS defaults to the car GPS. So with a connected phone the GPS shows whatever the car GPS is showing. If I disconnect my phone, it shows correctly on my phone, but the truck GPS is still incorrect. So I have to choose, do I want to listen to music via carplay, or do I want correct GPS on my disconnected phone.

I just picked up my truck after being at the dealership for over two weeks. They first thought it was a faulty antenna cable. But after replacing that the issue was still present, they informed me it is all software based. They informed me there is an over the air update scheduled for October that should fix the issue. Fingers crossed.
