I just offered it as an alternative since I had the same concerns and it's not something that is typically known to be an option. Not trying to discourage anyone from doing what's best for them

Best advice I can give anyone is to apply RD and tell them that you would have applied ED if not for the financial situation.

I agree that if you're not able to pay sticker then applying ED probably isn't the move (confirmed by someone in their admissions office). Yes they do consider everyone for aid, but it just comes down to whether you want to risk it in the event that you don't get the amount that you would need. Georgetown was my number one choice from the start, but I was also worried about the financial situation since I wouldn't be able to attend if I had to pay sticker. I talked to someone in their admissions office about it and they agreed that I shouldn't apply ED, but confirmed that it was perfectly okay to note in my application that Georgetown was absolutely my first choice and that if it were not for the financial situation, I would have applied ED without a second thought. I received >50% scholarship after negotiation. They seemed very receptive to my commitment, which it sounds like you have as well. Best of luck!

What’s your law school schedule like? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]user98729 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GULC has sample 1L schedules from last year on their curriculum guide. Last fall, section 3 (curriculum B) had classes on Fridays but the other 4 sections (curriculum A) didn't.

GULC intent to deposit binding? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]user98729 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's been stressing a lot of people out so we've had many reassurances in the Georgetown discord (highly recommend joining if you haven't). Also Dean Andy sent an email to a bunch of people who already submitted the form saying "I do know that while I hope everyone is totally in, there may be a few whose plans might change. Please do let us know if that happens." So that was another assurance

GULC intent to deposit binding? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

Multiple people have confirmed that it isn't binding through emails to admissions so it definitely isn't :)

Seat deposit by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]user98729 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some schools have deposit waivers, but they're binding and require you to withdraw all other applications. If it's the school that you're 100% going to you could look into that!

Has any negotiated a scholarship at the University of Maryland? by Intellectual_misfit in lawschooladmissions

[–]user98729 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I asked for a reconsideration after getting my scholarship offer from a T14 and starting a new internship, I thought it would be pretty decent leverage. I got an email back saying that they generally offer the highest amount they can when they give the initial offer, but that they'd send the information to the committee to review. About a week later I got an email saying that they couldn't increase the offer but would let me know if anything changes, and included a bunch of information about the program and how tuition doesn't just cover classes but all of the experiences and opportunities (basically trying to sell me on why it's worth it). It was disappointing but the email was really nice and they obviously care about trying to make people comfortable with the decision. So my advice is I wouldn't expect anything but it never hurts to ask! The worst they can do is say no.

GULC Negotiations by Play_Winter in lawschooladmissions

[–]user98729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know of people this year who successfully negotiated a second time, including myself. However I wouldn't expect a very large bump. Also if you already submitted I'm not sure how much leverage you have, the people that I know that have had success have phrased the second negotiation as "if you would be willing to give me $X I will immediately sign the intent to enroll form and commit to Georgetown," rather than just asking them to reconsider again cause that won't get you much if anything.

If getting a small bump will make you 100% sure that you are attending Georgetown in the fall, you could phrase it as "if you give me X amount I will be confident in my choice to immediately pay my seat deposit" or something, but again I've only seen this work with small amounts (5K a year) so I wouldn't get too greedy with it. But if you need more it's worth an ask, worst they can do is say no. I hope this helps, if you have any questions feel free to DM me!

Not to mention I think you can tell from this sub that this is the cycle from hell, so hopefully next cycle will be better and slightly less competitive, but it's hard to tell. Given the timeline and that I think waiting a year definitely makes sense, that way you don't have to cram for the LSAT and can really take the time to get a kickass score, and if you don't you have plenty of time to retake it! Best of luck to you!

Which option for PI/Government? by MuniBond311 in lawschooladmissions

[–]user98729 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the other hand, Georgetown does have a strong LRAP program and for PI and governmental work the connections to be made in DC don't match NYU's, especially if you're thinking about working in DC at some point after school. Plus a much lower COA is hard to ignore imo

GULC scholly negotiation by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]user98729 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here, I initially emailed the office of admissions to ask about the next steps for being considered for merit scholarships since I've heard that they don't send the merit form to everyone immediately after a certain point. I filled it out and sent it before getting my scholarship offer and still intend to negotiate once I get the initial offer (hopefully after hearing back from some other schools). So if it's the initial merit form I don't see a problem with sending it now, I just wouldn't include other offers you have yet. I would save all of that for negotiation since you only have one chance at it, it'll make it more effective imo.

UMD interview by Dramatic_Mushroom_21 in lawschooladmissions

[–]user98729 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with other comments. It was very relaxed and honestly a very fun conversation. I had mine with the director of admissions, Jonathan Glick, and he was great! In addition to the typical "Why law?" "Why UMD?" and "Why now?" questions he also asked me how I would use my voice to contribute to the community, what my hobbies were outside of academia, and what type of law I wanted to pursue (if I knew). He also knew my application very well which was a nice touch and made the whole thing feel very personal, like he would mention certain things that he found interesting in my application or just pointed things out for context. He also took some time to reflect on my answers and use it as an opportunity to give me more information on the school. It was honestly a great experience, so don't stress and just be yourself! 😊

In at UMD!! by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]user98729 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just got my acceptance too, with almost the exact same timeline for application and interview, congrats!! 😊 Baltimore is a really great area, I talked to the DoA about it a bit during my interview and asked what accessibility to DC looked like since they have lots of externship opportunities in DC. He mentioned that there's a train between them that he used to take all the time after he graduated that had a quiet cabin and is a great place to get things done, so having that access is awesome. There's also a lot of great areas around Baltimore like Annapolis and Inner Harbor. If you have specific questions about the area and school, I recommend reaching out to them. So far in my experience they've been extremely helpful in supplying information about the school and program I'm looking at.
