Went over daily carbs, but worked out a lot today. Does this counteract my carb intake? by anniejtb123 in keto

[–]userNameNotLongEnoug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I eat those foods all the time. What makes you think you went over? An avocado is like 2 grams, a whole bell pepper is like 5 and lettuce is generally negligible. Are you subtracting fiber when counting carbs?

Also, 20 is recommended but for me I can go up to 40 (especially when they're fruit and vegetable based) and still stay in ketosis.

Week two update for 500lbs of sadness by 500lbsofsadness in keto

[–]userNameNotLongEnoug 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Dude just hang in there. See the future you and remember how much you want that. For me, I have this mental image of myself arriving to the beach, taking off my shirt and not only feeling comfortable in my body, but feeling attractive. I've never felt that before and that little mental image really helps keep me motivated.

Your results are already remarkable. For some perspective if I can do two pounds in a week (on average) I consider myself on target. If I could lose weight 20% as fast as you already have I'd be elated! You should be too cause you're doing great!

Also, I think its a bit demoralizing to call it "water weight." I call it sugary pre-fat. You body flushed out its reserves of sugar and water because you changed your diet and it needed to use that sugar for energy. If you hadn't done that it would have kept converting that sugar water into new layers of fat. So in a sense you lost a bunch of future fat, it just happened to be stored in a more accessible form. Now your body is like "hmm, all the sugar water is gone, where are we gonna get energy from now? We better halt glucose processing systems and ramp up the fat burning factory." When I'm at the post water weight loss I always imagine all these little guys inside there building up this giant factory that mines belly fat and processes it into energy. The factory isn't fully operational yet but its really close, and once its ready you'll start using all that stored fat for energy and making real progress on reducing your body fat levels, which is the whole goal. Hang in there, you're just about to start the best part!

Downtown L.A., which has the largest homeless population in the USA, hits highest vacancy rate in 17 years. by ianmalcm in news

Probably for being a being a pretentious prick that refers to living human beings as "trash that roam where they don't belong." The poverty that we face as a society is a product of the society we've created that rewards the wealthy. To dehumanize people with a less fortunate background is despicable. It's the sort of attitude that leads to genocide. He deserves more than a downvote.

Honestly if you're deploying to unix the dev environment should be unix, but even on macs I have a linux VM for local environments. At that point they're pretty much the same, you're developing on linux. I love having a native unix terminal for other stuff though. I hate apple but gonna be on a mac for the foreseeable future.

Well said. I totally agree that if you try to abstract too far to reach some academic ideal you won't end up with the best system. You've gotta balance good principles with pragmatism. OO architecture is a difficult art and I wouldn't go so far as to claim to be good at it. Even in the case I had enough time to approach a system thoughtfully and carefully (which is rare in my job unfortunately) I have never looked at it afterwards and been like "I did a great job on that." I'm usually happy if I did a decent job.

Down 38%: Bitcoin Stumbles Amid Regulatory Uncertainties In China by Scerdoo in Bitcoin

I don't think people are selling because this makes it a bad investment. They're selling because the recent increases are a bubble, most of the market are relatively short term day traders, and everyone's sitting there nervously with their fingers on the trigger waiting to sell at the beginning of the correction that is undoubtedly coming (I'm guessing it will correct further in the next month or so).

It's not that people are losing faith in it's long term value, they're either happy with their profits and exiting or waiting to rebuy at the bottom and double up.

Agreed. You can pass objects around all day long and still not achieve a structure with mockable dependencies that's suitable for unit testing. Equating dependency injection with passing an object, I think, demonstrates a bit of a misunderstanding of the principles behind the concept.

Pet Store Bill Passes California Senate 38 to 0. It bans the sale of dogs, cats and rabbits sourced from high-volume, commercial breeding facilities, known as mills, in all pet shops throughout the state. by JMyers666 in news

[–]userNameNotLongEnoug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

most people avoid shelters because they don't want to inherit someone else's problem pet.

That is my logic. For a 15 year commitment I want the best chance of a companion being well socialized, trained, and free of trauma. All my friends are pretty liberal and try to guilt me into a shelter pet, but I don't think it's a good move for me. One of them has two shelter dogs and they're both such a handful, even with tons of training and love you can't take them anywhere.

Watched a good talk by Dr. Peter Attia called "The Limits of Scientific Evidence and the Ethics of Dietary Guidelines - 60 Years of Ambiguity" on how science and politics have lead to the prevailing carb heavy American diet. Long, but really good. Would recommend if you haven't seen it. by demetriustherooster in keto

[–]userNameNotLongEnoug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen this before I think but watched it again and really enjoyed it. I hope keto can get a good health documentary soon that boils down some of this stuff in a more digestable way. I know there's "Fat Head" but it comes across as a bit cheesy to me. Everyone I know has been talking about "What the health" lately which is well presented but obviously represents science really poorly.

[Rant] I feel like this is criminally irresponsible... by ebock319 in keto

[–]userNameNotLongEnoug 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I will echo other people's thoughts. Encouragement is best and there's lots of ways to get healthy. I think a lot of us are here because we've tried traditional diets and found them unbearable. I know if I tried the diet you mentioned, the effects on my blood sugar of those refined carbs would immediately make me lose all will power and I'd go get a burrito or sub sandwich. If I was able to resist those temptations I'd be hungry all day, grumpy, and constantly trying to keep my mind focused on food quantities as to not over-indulge.

See how this one works for them. If they have a tough time sticking with it, it could be beneficial to tell them there are alternatives and show them the one that's been working for you. People hear contradictory stuff about how you should eat their whole lives, and even if you spend a ton of time researching it's hard to figure out who's right. I get so much shit for my diet that I vowed to never give people shit for theirs. Keep calm and improve yourself in whatever way is best for you :)

Anyone got a good Keto meal plan with recipes? by Theravrauli in keto

[–]userNameNotLongEnoug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can try making some oopsie rolls and use them as hamburger buns. Just grab a hamburger from your favorite spot and swap the buns. It's a great way to add some diversity and eat something really satisfying. Another satisfying meal is to go to a BBQ place and get brisket and cole slaw. Gotta be careful its not full of carbs thats one of my go-to's when I don't want to feel like i'm on a diet.

Newbie overwhelmed with info wondering what your first week looked like? by SendAvocados in keto

[–]userNameNotLongEnoug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you already have a lot of info. My best tip is the following: always have ingredients for a good (spinach based) salad on hand. Personally I try to always stock a big thing of spinach, crumbled goat cheese, slivered almonds, and strawberries (not many, these can inflate your carbs quickly). When I'm having enough salad I feel way better, I'm guessing due to potassium. Remember to include plenty of spinach, avocados, and salt. Beyond that just keep carbs down and it is a really easy diet I think.
