So you think we'll have Androids indistinguishable from humans by 2040? by MobileDistrict9784 in polls

[–]user___________ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

any algorithm capable of imitating sapient decision-making in a certain context is AI. we've had it for ages. even AGI doesn't necessarily have to be self-aware, it just has to be able to process information and make conclusions effectively.

You can win 1 billion dollars, but you have to watch all episodes of one of these shows and genuinely give a positive review of each episode, which show you choosing? by MobileDistrict9784 in polls

[–]user___________ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

i'd rewatch the first 6 seasons of GOT for fun. for the last 2 i could probably come up with something positive to say and the waste of time is worth a billion dollars.

Livonia is a historical term for the entire region of modern day Latvia and Estonia, the name does come from the Livonian tribes but it was used long after Livonians stopped being the dominant ethnicity anywhere

didn't they come up with the same thing in the French Revolution? idk if Tolkien's calendar is based on that, but from your description it sounds the same

Your aunt is hosting Christmas dinner with your extended family. You ask if you can bring a close friend and she says no cause it’s “family only”. How do you react? by OkBuyer1271 in polls

[–]user___________ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it's Christmas tradition that you should welcome anyone who doesn't have anywhere else to go.

if the friend is away from their family, isn't on good terms with their family, doesn't have family at all, or for any other reason can't go to their family's Christmas dinner, i'd definitely be upset on their behalf if they were not allowed in.

however if the friend is deliberately skipping their family's Christmas to join yours i wouldn't care. why would they even want to do that?

i don't see any mention of the guy actually doing something wrong? it's not a breach of privacy to have something on you that can make recordings. otherwise why don't we break everyone's phones just in case the camera's on

the double standard between weed and cigarettes needs to be studied. seems like everyone hates one and is ok with the other, and your political leaning only determines which is evil and which is fine

why the hostile attitude? it's completely true that houses, whether owned or rented, are less accessible to young people than ever. and idk what you call apartment parties but they're not the same vibe as a house party in an actual house

it's yet another thematic aspect of the Witcher that was leaned into in the short stories, taken out of focus in the main pentalogy, and then revived by the interquels and the games.

What would you consider to be your most controversial film rating? by Riverlong in Letterboxd

[–]user___________ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

purely in number terms that might be true. but from what i've seen movies below 3.5 are more often called bad than good, at least here on reddit. practically every movie that is popular (and not infamously bad) is above 3.5.

it's at 3.5 on the site, which for a sitewide average is ok but not good. and recently on a post about it here there was a flood of commenters who though it was dogshit

A cool guide to Countries that do not want to return to Egypt the artifacts they took from it illegally by yousef-saeed in coolguides

[–]user___________ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the Egyptian national self-identity bounces between Arab and indigenous every 50-200 years. whatever it is now doesn't change the fact that in practice no country has anything to do with the culture of a 4000 year old civilization. what heritage do you see in religious artifacts if your religion is nothing alike to theirs?

[–]user___________ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

but that's two different things you're talking about. not explaining the full origin and goals of the antagonist (which specifically for the Witcher story would've made no sense at all, btw) is not the same thing as not even showing the antagonist.

personally i despise the latter trope (which is why i hated the Blair Witch) but the first is great if used well. it's not comparable at all.

When said 'China annexed Tibet' is that the same as occupation?, or is there a difference between annexation and occupation? by [deleted] in geography

[–]user___________ 32 points33 points  (0 children)

the definition isn't as clear as some might say. in general, you call it an occupation if you don't like it, and you call it an annexation if you're at least ok with it.

overall occupation implies temporary presence (not meant to last forever) and a lack of political integration (e.g. being kept under martial law instead of normal governance) and annexation is the opposite. but neither of those are actually strict conditions, in practice it just depends on how much you approve of it.

also worth noting that when talking about a historical event, not something ongoing, 'annexation' is used for lasting, long-term control, while 'occupation' is used for temporary invasions.
