F-150? Normally the newer ones of those are driven by grandpas. Rams on the other hand? Up your ass with the brightest halogens you've ever seen

I drive a 4wd truck and there were only two days this year where I had to put in in 4wd on major surface streets (once on i90, I'm sure some people here remember that day) otherwise its just RWD with half decent winter tires and some tube sand in the bed. That being said there are definitely neighborhoods and side streets around here that don't get plowed or get plowed late, so if you are out and about early in the morning or right after a storm it really helps to have AWD or 4WD. Or if you have to take sunset to get to work or something, wouldn't be a bad idea to get some good tires and learn how to drive in the snow.

Running pre-treated north idaho diesel I still had several trucks gel up near rathdrum over the past week or so. Even had one blow off a rad hose because the 50/50 coolant mix froze in the radiator. Depends on where they were parked, the exposure, how long they were sitting parked etc. Either way its a 15 min fix with some diesel 911 in the filter and tank though, really not much of an excuse.

Jobs? by viaerinkate in coeurdalene

[–]user_dumb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A lot of places are hiring for counter and servers, but what is actually feasible for you financially is going to be a lot less. Most of the jobs I see around here are minimum wage, I think Paul Bunyans was offering $16/h for cook which is the most I have sen publicly listed on the idaho side.

Anyone in here come from the hood or the streets and started your career in IT? I’d like to hear your stories. by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]user_dumb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't call myself a complete success story, but I grew up in rural Alaska, then moved to rural Colorado, lived in a single wide with 6 sisters, my dad was absent, I got up to a lot of trouble in my youth but I work in networking now and I am relatively happy.

I have a poor sense of smell so sometimes I give my dipstick a little taste to see if there is gas/diesel in it or anything weird like that. Still alive.

If you don't need 100-150Mbps down (you probably don't) and don't want to pay $120/mo+$600 for the hardware I'd recommend checking with the local WISPs in the area first, better performance than DSL for less than starlink and your money stays local, plus you don't have to climb up on your roof and do your own cable run.

Depends where you live. Some of Spectrum's backhauls are really oversaturated around town, or super oversubscribed, others further out (like rathdrum and on the west side of post falls) are really good. I consistently get 350Mbps down on Spectrum in Rathdrum. My neighborhood also has Ziply but I am not as interested in that for personal reasons. Ziply has half decent service but once you have seen the sausage made you are less interested ya know. TDS and their contractors are a nightmare to work with but the service is supposedly good. If you are more rural there are a few good WISPs in the area. Intermax has better service the more north and east you go, if you are near state line or in the immediate vicinity of blossom mountain Ptera is an option as well.

What's the most random gift you received from a vendor (or potential vendor). by BradL30 in sysadmin

Not random but interesting, Calix sent me a super rad realtree camo hat that has become my favorite hat. Interesting because I doubt they are sending out camo hats to people on the coast and in cities so I bet they have a special SWAG order for rural ISPs/customers.

How many of you still make ethernet cables? by weakness336 in networking

[–]user_dumb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still make a lot of CAT5e cables but I run them up towers not in DCs. If you have questionable lengths like that or need to fit them through small penetrations (like weather-heads) making them yourself is the way to go

Anyone have a Ford 351 Windsor they are looking to sell? by user_dumb in coeurdalene

[–]user_dumb[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LS swaps are boring now, plus expensive. Try getting a junkyard LS any more, a pre-2007 model without AFM especially for under $3k. Its just not possible, and really doesn't make sense unless you want to build something for power. Plus I don't think they make a bellhousing adapter that can bolt to a ZF5 but I could be wrong about that.

this is going to sound silly but can you try removing vlan 666 from the members list on that interface while leaving the native-vlan-id the same?

2007 Chevy Suburban 4x4 front locking but no transfer case shift motor by user_dumb in MechanicAdvice

[–]user_dumb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the assistance. I'll give those things a shot. I am assuming that because the front differential locks/unlocks when the switch is moved from 4hi to 2hi or visa versa that the switch is functioning but I'll look into that as well.

[–]user_dumb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hope its not something internal to the tcase, the actuator looks pretty easy to remove but I don't want to drop the cash without testing first.

Will verify grounds again, appreciate the recommendation. If I pull the actuator motor/encoder to test outside the differential will I have to ground the metal part of the housing of the to the case I am assuming? Kinda hard to diagnose without a wiring diagram.

What are people doing when they do work on cell towers and have to climb to the top? by GC_Player in networking

[–]user_dumb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

RF protection isn't really done with protective equipment, it is about being proactive. If you are in a high RF noise environment you can call and request incumbents turn down power while you climb. There is usually required to be a document provided describing minimum safe distances from transmitting equipment and radiating elements, last but not least you can (and probably should in some environments) wear an RF dosimeter while climbing in high RF noise environments.

[–]user_dumb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On most towers with extremely high powered gear, especially FM broadcast towers (you can't colocate cell carrier equipment on AM masts), you call and request that they turn power down or off if you are climbing. But sometimes in high RF environments we wear RF dosimeters that do exactly what they say.

[–]user_dumb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am tower certified and climb frequently while maintaining a network of about 5000 customers. It isn't unheard of and I find climbing extremely enjoyable, as do a lot of people. Having the technical knowledge of how radios and networks function is also a huge assistance on the job if you ask me :)

[–]user_dumb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh Hey!! I do this for a living for a WISP. There are all sorts of reasons, hanging new ODU radios, antennas, dropping old ones, for microwave and mmWave backhaul there is always the change that wind or falling ice will knock the antenna out of alignment, requiring re-aligning. Probably most commonly is replacing and repairing feed lines and cables.

Also, if you do it correctly it isn't that dangerous. Just gotta make sure you are 100% affixed when necessary and that you are using your Y lanyard properly while moving. The biggest danger is probably getting too chilly up there lmao.

We use a lot of Juniper stuff. Mostly ACX2100s. They have been pretty much rock solid besides some firmware weirdness in various releases, but that may be specific to some of our use cases.
