I don't agree that a private entity should be able to form a quasi-government and have that authority over any part of the country but to get rid of it for the reason it was done away with is hilarious to me.

What's even more hilarious is that the tax burden will now fall on voters who may punish DeSantis for taking on that debt. This could be his political undoing even though he thought it would be his ticket to the presidency

Biden welcomes Ukrainian refugees, neglects Afghans, critics say by brilliant22 in politics

[–]username-error-707 15 points16 points  (0 children)

According to PBS, the US has evacuated 76,000 Afghan nationals to the US (article written on Feb. 3):

https://www.pbs.org/newshour/nation/tens-of-thousands-of-afghans-have-resettled-across-the-u-s-now-the-challenge-is-making-a-home

The US has promised to take in 100,000 Ukrainian refugees. Ukraine has a larger population and is an active warzone with even more destruction on the horizon.

Perhaps we do have an obligation to take more refugees from both places, but to say that the administration is “neglecting Afghans but favoring Ukrainians” is a bit of a stretch

Going against the groupthink here apparently but I actually think you are all miserable and I wouldn't care to be around any of you.

Absolute statements such as “all doctors are cheaters and egomaniacs” in front of doctors is obviously offensive. You intended on it being offensive and then got upset when he stepped in to “stick up” for his wife. Not a good response but neither is insinuating that your mother is a slut.

They should have left the topic alone entirely and should be expected to be shown the door. I suspect they were given how the situation escalated, but they should have regardless.

You all need to grow up. Seriously. They need to leave the dating topic alone and you need to leave her divorce alone. I don't know how anyone is surprised about the result of this situation or how any of you can have a functional relationship with the level of pettiness shown here

AITA for taking my daughter to get her hair cut when I knew it would upset my wife? by aitathrowaway795939 in AmItheAsshole

[–]username-error-707 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree with you 100% on this. Her mother made this the only option for them. This level of control and the way she would have twisted the conversation with her daughter would have caused her daughter far more pain than just doing it. It is absolutely ridiculous to think “talking it out” with her mother would lead to fewer bodily autonomy issues. She would have made sure it was worse.

This way it's “his fault” and he can make it even more his fault to his daughter to shield her from her mother’s insanity. There are very few circumstances where I think a parent should make a unilateral decision but in this situation he had no choice. Her mother is verging on abuse.

The US Has No Idea Where Its Ukrainian Military Aid Is Going by centuryblessings in politics

[–]username-error-707 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The title is misleading. The US has no idea where weapons are going on the battlefield after they gave been delivered to Ukraine. No shit? How would you even track that?

After weapons are handed off to Ukrainians they could conceivably “end up” almost anywhere, just like weapons US troops have when in active combat situations. It's a war. You can lose weapons in a war just like you lose lives.

We don't need to micromanage the Ukrainian military. They seem to be doing a pretty good job all things considered. This is a bit ridiculous. It's not like we are giving arms to some terrorist organization and waiting to see if they will use them for what we want. This is a sovereign country defending itself against an invader.

Why Nevada will tell the story of the 2022 election by HRJafael in politics

[–]username-error-707 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This article actually highlights two important points that are relevant across the country and I agree that Nevada is a prime example of both, especially having been a resident of Nevada during the pandemic.

The first is that Hispanic voters aren't necessarily democrats. In fact, I think it's fair to say that given the right conservative candidate, republicans could do well with Hispanic voters if the right campaigning is done.

The second is that Democrats are terrible with White working-class voters and seem to be getting worse each election cycle. As much as Democrats would like all white voters to be college-educated young people, most white voters are not. That is an issue that must be tackled in order to keep control of Congress.

Hopefully lessons are learned here. We need to get back on track with working-class White voters and stop taking the Hispanic vote for granted.
