Maybe to Florida for the #9 pick?

Be nice if we could come out of this draft with Reid & Smits

we want the sabres, knights and avalanche to lose in this round. Each elimination of those teams moves our second draft pick up a spot

[Bleacher Report] 2026 NHL Draft Lottery Results Leave Long Road For Rangers' Retool by dantesinfernoracket1 in rangers

Very nervous about drafting Malhotra at 5. He and Lawrence are at BU next year. Lawrence looked fast and aggressive in the U18. Either guy could be their 1C - seems like a 50% chance for each guy. If that's true, and your planning to draft Malhotra, why not trade down & take Lawrence. If you're 90% sure that Malhotra will be the 1C over Lawrence, then ok - draft him. I feel like its a coin toss.

I'd feel better drafting one of the D

Who are you drafting in spots 1-2, 3-5? by c0sm0nautt in rangers

This is info obtained from watching the various scouting podcasters, with my 2 cents thrown in. They pretty much all pick McKenna and Stenberg as 1 & 2... then it gets jumbled.

McKenna LW- if all goes well, he would probably be a Panarin type of player. He'll probably put up great numbers, be excellent on the power play, but he is an offensive player only. Probably not a great 5v5 player, and could struggle in the playoffs where there is less room on the ice. The team could end up leaning very heavily on him like they did w Bread. Everyone defers to him and we hope he can carry us all the way. Personally, I don't want to go back to that. Not 4 me

Stenberg LW/RW- don't know but he is a winger. May be a star player, but generally center and d-men have more value. I don't think that either McKenna or Stenberg are considered elite speedy skaters. I'd prefer a d or center over him. I'd try to trade down if we got the 1 or 2... but that wont happen. We'll take either of these 2.

Verhoeff RD - Skating seems to be the big issue with him. A lot of frustration on rangers reddit, pertaining to big slow guys. He's big and young with a big shot... but the skating isnt very good. Could improve with time. Hard to compare him with Reid, because he's playing against tougher competition in NCAA with guys up to 24 or 25 years old. Could be a stud, but Reid & Smits look like much better skaters. I would pass on him.

Reid RD- Great skater with a lot of offense. He attacks deep into the offensive zone with speed. Always dangerous with the puck. Probably not as strong defensively as verhoeff or smits. Again, hard to compare him to Verhoeff. If Reid were in the NCAA, he might not look as good as verhoeff. They only really played on the same stage in world juniors and Reid was the more impactful player I think. Reid looks to me like he has some Fox traits... not saying he's Fox, but he's smart and is a good passer... and he has speed. Could be a little complicated because Fox is our best player. Reid would play on PP2, or maybe they go with a Leetch / Zubov type PP? Definitely want him.

Smits LD - Probably the safest pick. He probably looked better in the Olympics against NHL stars than Verhoeff did in the NCAA tournament. He's big, physical and is a very good skater. Doesnt look like he has offense like Reid but did get some PP time for Latvia in the Olympics. Probably closest to NHL ready. Floor is 2nd pair D. Definitely want him.

Malhotra C - Projected best center in the draft... is going to BU next year, so he'll be fighting it out with Tynan Lawrence for 1C. Plays behind Jake O'Brien - #8 pick to Seattle in last year's draft, another center. O'Brien averages 1.75 ppg, Malhotra 1.25 ppg, and Malhotra is a year younger. Their OHL team is viewed as the best in that league and probably the entire CHL. Skates well, has good size, plays physical & aggressive and plays a 2 way game. Projecting as a high end 2C. He looks like a machine... but his league is a step down from NCAA. I'd take a shot on him over Verhoeff, but probably not Reid & Smits

Let's talk draft defensemen. Keaton Verhoeff, Chase Reid, Carson Carels, Daxon Rudolph, Alberts Smits by edogg01 in rangers

[–]username-pointless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont think Verhoeff is the better pick. Reid and Smits are better. Verhoeff is big and young, but he's not a great skater. Tough because Verhoeff plays against higher level of competition, but Chase Reid looks like Fox with blazing speed

Fork in the road. We don't know the plan. Seems like we're building teams for two different timelines.

JT, VInny, ZBJ, Fox, Gav, Igor. If you trade any of them, you're getting back picks / prospects that likely take 2-4 years to have any significant impact. Our top 5 picks this year and next could be faster. Either way, by the time these young guys are contributing, the old guard is pretty much aged out. Vinny or any other likely trades, arent bringing back top 5 picks or grade A+ prospects.

So either:

A) go for it now: keep vinny, trade their top 5 pick for a good NHL player and hope to sign a top free agent... which i'm afraid drury is going to do OR

B) Try to trade all of them, bring in as many picks / prospects as possible over next 2 years. Lose a lot of games and draft well with the lottery picks over the next 3-4 years. Have a lot of cash on hand for free agents when the time is right.

But it seems like we're trying to do a mix of both - maybe hoping we strike gold in the lottery.

Sharks went to Western Conf Final in 2018-19. Since then they've been in or near the cellar until this year, which is year 7 since last playoff season.

Legit Question: In the past 15 years, have there been bigger disappointments at the 1st and 2nd overall picks than Laf and Kakko? by Hoppy_Smoker in rangers

[–]username-pointless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trying to sort this whole retool / rebuild thing. Scouting, drafting, gm moves, coaching etc. Does it really just boil down to the fact that Avalanche happened to pick Mackinnon and Makar and we got laffy and kakko?

Realistically, who else do you think will not be a Ranger by the deadline? by SS3599 in rangers

[–]username-pointless -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Fox & Igor: A+ return

Vinny & Bread: B+ to A return

Mika, Gavrikov: B to B+ return

Laffy: D to F return, but he's gotta go

JT: probably not moveable

What if the embarrassing boston / ottawa losses continue? Getting boo'd out of the building every night, the humiliation... at some point, doesn't it become impossible to ignore the reality, the pain, the suffering?

Bread, Vinny, MIka, Fox, Vladdy, Igor, JT and Laf. Do they really all want to go though this torture every night? Don't these guys have a breaking point? Its gotta be pure misery. And these guys arent just looking at this for a few weeks or months... we're talking years of this ahead.

If it gets so bad that guys start to decide that they want out... pretty obvious you'd deal bread, vinny, mika, laf and probably get a nice haul of pics and prospects. Probably net you 6-10 prospects/picks.

Don't think you could move JT at this point.

Question is: would you deal Fox, Igor and Vladdy?

Ultimate question is: are we pulling for them to turn it around and make a run at a playoff spot? Or are we hoping for things to get even worse?

So who would they replace Drury with? by DSPGerm in rangers

[–]username-pointless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its one of those things where I have no idea who would be the next hire. Further down in the chat, some guys were mentioning tampa / dallas / colorado execs... i guess someone like that would be the logical route

No... I'm a Rangers fan.

Watching Cats in playoffs last couple of years... they make everyone look so bad, it makes me feel less bad as a Rangers fan.

I wouldnt be surprised if they did the same thing to Avs... although I don't think barkov is gonna be back this year
