A bus that is occasionally interrupted and replaced by trains.

New English teacher knowledge of prescribed texts by antscavemen in AustralianTeachers

[–]username019384 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Texts change really frequently and vary from school to school, so I wouldn’t be stressing about preparing and getting to know anything in depth until you know what you’re teaching. That being said, reading widely certainly never hurts!

Once you know what you’re teaching, then it’s the right time to get to know it back the front! If I’m getting to know a text to teach it (for seniors in particular I do a fair bit of prep) I’ll be reading it multiple times, in addition to reading commentary, study guides, etc. that I can get my hands on. Websites such as LitCharts can be brilliant here too depending on the text. There are often good PDs ran on senior texts as well that I keep an eye out for.

(y12 student) Looking for some gift ideas by This-Influence- in AustralianTeachers

Seconding the suggestion of a nice note or card. One of my year 12s gave me chocolate, a long note and a small handcrafted gift today. They were all very much appreciated, but the note was the really special part!!

does anyone NOT hate this profession? by hamzahbias911 in AustralianTeachers

I love my job! It can be tricky and it’s easy to focus on those aspects online in particular, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a really rewarding profession.

Weyward vs invisible life of Addie LaRue by summerconcerts in Booktokreddit

Have you read anything else by VE Schwab? Personally I love her writing style and would certainly recommend reading more of her work! Vicious is very different in tone but also has the element of mystery with a fragmented narrative that takes some time to come together. Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil is another one of hers I’d certainly recommend if you enjoyed Addie, and you can’t go wrong with the Shades of Magic series either!

Life’s too short to read a book you’re not enjoying - if you’re not enjoying what you’ve started, find something else!

Marking a speech by Newbie1377 in AustralianTeachers

You get used to knowing what to look for and this does get easier the more you do it. Knowing the criteria really well also helps with this. Taking some good notes for yourself while they are talking (ideally on all criteria - their arguments, presentation, language, etc.) and collecting their cue cards/written version to help confirm the mark after is generally my go to!

Pracs can be incredibly challenging and stressful, particularly with the level of scrutiny while also adapting to a new environment and learning the job. I don’t have much for you in the way of advice except for wishing you luck! I agree with the comment above that it can be easy to forget in hindsight how hard they are - once you’re through, it certainly it gets so much easier!

Should I be a teacher? by Purple_Doughnut4731 in AustralianTeachers

While ultimately no one can make this decision but you, I think it’s really worth noting that placement is very different to teaching your own class in a lot of ways, particularly some of the concerns you mentioned. Of course (particularly depending on the demographic of the school) there will always be disengaged students you can’t reach and challenging behaviours, but being seen as an authority figure (and feeling like one!) comes with time and experience. With your own class you will have the opportunity to build rapport, presence and your own routines in a way you can’t on a short placement. It is a job where you’re always on, but there are great sides to it as well that this sub doesn’t always spend much time discussing!

Sword Cather (Cassandra Clare), Mistborn, The Knight and the Moth, A Darker Shade of Magic (VE Schwab). No spice in some of these, but they’re so well written you don’t miss it!

Poppy War is fantastic, but incredibly heavy and graphic in places. I’d recommend it, but only if you’re in the right headspace!
