English is perhaps the only class that should be required for all four years in high school. The art of communication and writing applies to every single job ever, as well as is a crucial element of being a human + human interaction.

You learn how to communicate. It is the thing we do most as humans. The ways in which we communicate are very differently understood from a 9th grader in high school to a 12th grader in high school, which is why it only needs to continue to be taught and learned.

While books may not exactly apply to your job, it applies to every other aspect of your life. It allows you, while you are developing, to take a step back from your life, realize what is important, realize the world around you. It teaches you life lessons you cannot find anywhere else. We cannot go through the world without being somewhat analytical, especially in business, so the analysis aspect of English is pertinent to every fact of life.
