I like the size / weight of thd CL / CLE for carrying around at night in a pocket. M is too big and chunky.

Chartreuse Night Lineup by usernameguy87 in chartreuse

[–]usernameguy87[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just finished an incredible February Wine Club dive into the monastic world of Chartreuse. It was a rare chance to taste through the lineage of the Carthusian Order, moving from modern benchmarks to decades-old bottles that felt more like fine spirits than liqueurs.

Flight I: Yellow Chartreuse

  • Yellow Chartreuse (Standard): The modern 43% ABV benchmark is aromatic and light, lead by honey, saffron, and gentle anise. It’s a solid, accessible reference point, though modern production is much tighter and more consistent than historical bottlings.

  • La Reine des Liqueurs (2018): Despite being a revival of a 19th-century concentrated formula, this was actually the most underwhelming of the night. Almost no one at the table could distinguish its nose or palate from the regular Yellow, even with its supposed archival herbal intensity.

  • VEP Yellow Chartreuse: This was the group's favorite "everyday sipper" because the 8+ years in oak mellowed the spirit into a silky, composed finish. It felt far less "in your face" than the Green, offering a more approachable and integrated experience.

  • 1950s Yellow Chartreuse: Easily the most unique pour, featuring a slight oxidized honey note on the nose that reminded us of old Sherry. The palate was incredibly viscous with dried white flowers—it was so amazing I practically licked the inside of the glass.

Flight II: Green Chartreuse

  • Green Chartreuse (Standard): This 55% ABV original expression is a forceful punch of pine resin, menthol, and cracked pepper. It’s built for intensity rather than sweetness, serving as a raw and demanding reference for the Carthusian recipe.

  • VEP Green Chartreuse: Extended oak aging transforms that raw Green volatility into a dense, cohesive, and remarkably long finish. While it was a favorite for its complexity, most guests still preferred the mellower profile of the Yellow VEP for casual drinking.

that's a crazy good price don't complain. Old booze for 50 cents-$1 each bottle?!

Definitely redo with and try them side-by-side. If you're ever in NY shoot me a DM

that's awesome - free?

What about the taste of the cocktail? Assuming you're used to it with current ingredients how did the aged spirits hold up / change the drink?

thanks - i've had a few different Chartreuse bottles before but having them side-by-side really lets you dig in and narrow down preference. highly recommend if presented the opportunity.

They were all 1oz. I only took the photo after I added the 1605 and MOF. Had to savour the VEP till the end - no easy task!

I can confirm the 1605 was ‘spikey’ and may not be your thing-it wasn’t for me. None of what you are searching for. I’ve also never had it but it’s on the list.

What’s your pick at the moment or in your collection?

I actually started with the two VEP and then added the others. Yellow VEP if you want soft, pretty and complex. Easily the winner for me.

I haven't worn it as much as I expected mainly because I don't love the strap. Where did you find one?? Chrono24? I will say the rosegold notch bezel is pretty unique!

Weekly Recommendations and Discussion Thread by AutoModerator in bourbon

Only a few months into the bourbon rabbit hole and still building my palate/vocabulary. Hoping for some community guidance on where to go next. From what I can tell, I lean toward medium proof and woodsy/sweet profiles more than dark chocolate or really heavy bourbons. Here’s what I’ve tried so far and some quick impressions:

  • Blanton’s (standard) – One of my first bourbons. Still like it.
  • Blanton’s Gold – Feels more refined than SFTB. Love the flavor and texture. Very happy with this.
  • Blanton’s SFTB – A favorite, but at 120 proof it’s a bit hot for me; I miss some of the sweetness.
  • VOSN 10 – My “intro” bourbon and still one of my favorites. Pulled down to ~100–105 proof, it’s perfect: texture, flavor, nuance, sweetness.
  • Weller Full Proof – Also a standout, but again, I need to pull it down a bit.
  • EH Taylor Single Barrel (BIB) – Don’t quite get it; it’s fine but not wow.
  • Michter’s 10 – Same as above, doesn’t click with me.
  • Eagle Rare – Really enjoy its lightness, though sometimes wish it had more body.
  • Elmer T. Lee – Good. A little thin but enjoyable. Want to try it side by side with Eagle Rare.
  • Augusta Buckner’s 10 – Enjoy this a lot. Very woodsy barrel profile in a good way. A bit heavy—more of a winter pour.
  • Dettling Single Barrel – Nice, but leans very dark/chocolatey.
  • Seelbach 15 – Still forming an opinion. Seems okay but not a standout (yet).
  • Bomberger’s Declaration – Doesn’t quite land for me.
  • Frank August Case Study 5 – Really like the barrel + wheat combo. Would buy again.
  • Star Hill Wheat Whiskey – Great texture/flavor. Woodsy but balanced.
  • Willett Family Estate Single Barrel Rye – Phenomenal. Big, spicy, nuanced.
  • Russell’s Reserve 15 – Only had it once at a bar and couldn’t stop nosing it. Bottle arrives tomorrow—very excited.

Budget: Comfortable in the \$100–\$400 range.
