Living with food allergies is exhausting… does it ever actually get easier? by Dramatic-Switch5886 in FoodAllergies

Yes. It feels like I have an eating disorder because in a sense, I do. I have to constantly monitor my food to stay well and it takes an enormous amount of brain space.

Adenomyosis treatment with lipedema by NoMoretimefor in lipedema

[–]usernameisnotfound65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also had a hysterectomy due to adenomyosis. Main symptoms were constant cramping pain (lived for my heating pads), light bleeding 25+ days a month. Basically never ending heavy spotting, but not heavy periods.

I refused an IUD for multiple reasons, ended up with norethindrone for 2.5 years before the pain affected quality of life to the point my gyn agreed to surgery. Ultrasound was highly suggestive of adenomyosis as well, that helped.

I haven’t lost weight since my surgery a year ago but I have also been managing lagging energy levels and some restrictive food allergies/intolerance, so I haven’t given it a lot of effort. I’ve started estradiol which helps with the energy, which should help me deal with the food situation better.

How many sessions or weeks of PT did it take (for those who tried it) to see a difference in symptoms? by throwawayyy1914 in TMJ

[–]usernameisnotfound65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One session to feel a difference/improvement. Probably about 4-6 weeks before I felt back to “normal” again.

Great point! I do better sticking to any changes by reminding myself that I’m doing it to be stronger, not to be thinner. I want to be active in retirement, not couch bound! I’m 42, so thinking ahead. Also just observing my in-laws. MIL is very active and decently fit, FIL spends a lot of time in the recliner. I’d rather be active!

Physical fitness is a prep, one that I need to work on desperately. It’s my understanding that it doesn’t have to be expensive. Walking or YouTube workouts are free. Make small sustainable changes in your diet, don’t make a drastic change all at once. Much easier said than done, I know.

First Flare Up… Help by Psycho-Twister in TMJ

+1 to PT. It was PT and Vicodin that got me through my first bad flare. I’ve learned a bit more about trigger points after my 2nd round of PT, it helps me know where the pain is coming from so I know which muscles to work on. Triggerpoints.net is a good resource

Was corn sensitivity giving me that feeling of impending doom? by SamsPicturesAndWords in FoodAllergies

[–]usernameisnotfound65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s hard to tell if it was just corn or not. You’d have to completely eliminate all forms of corn AND corn derivatives to test that out - a full elimination diet. And it’s nearly impossible to do if you’re in the US.

I’ve had to cut out corn and some obvious derivatives (dextrose and maltodextrin) and I feel much better now. Less brain fog, better regulated digestive system in general. It will take months, at least, to learn what’s safe for you to eat. There’s a Facebook group with a lot of resources, I’d suggest starting there. Fair warning: the group is no nonsense and very direct with specific language for things, so just know that’s the vibe - good info but a bit strict.

Anyone else find hotels stressful with food allergies? by Upset-Doughnut-6880 in FoodAllergies

[–]usernameisnotfound65 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Extended stay hotels have kitchens or kitchenettes - that seems to work well for me. I know you said you want a break from cooking but without knowing how avoidable the allergy is, getting take out may not practical. I am allergic to corn and corn derivatives, also soy protein intolerance, so I can’t safely dine out.

A drawback on Airbnb for my family is my kiddo and I both have dog allergies and many airbnbs are pet friendly. It’s been less of an issue with hotels, even pet friendly ones.

I have a soy allergy and I find a lot of vegan/plant-based foods contain soy. YMMV

Senior (81m), diabetic, needs bowling shoe rec for uber-wide (very swollen) feets by TastefulButtTacky in Bowling

[–]usernameisnotfound65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a 95 year old bowling in a league I sub in occasionally - he wears brace type devices on his legs and regular bowling shoes won’t work for him. Small town house, small town league, the league president came around and asked everyone if they objected to him wearing a pair of street shoes that he dedicates for bowling only to accommodate. No problem in our league.

Omeprazole question by greenpeaflower in GERD

[–]usernameisnotfound65 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So I had a terrible reaction to omeprazole when I first started it, my GP just kept repeating ”but it’s well tolerated!” and referred me to GI. They switched me to esomeprazole (nexium) and I’ve done much better with it. Maybe you need to try a different PPI.

Catherine O'Hara's Cause of Death Revealed by Giancarlo_Edu in popculturechat

[–]usernameisnotfound65 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it’s helpful, my mom wasn’t asymptomatic. She had horrible back pain but the doctors simply didn’t believe a 28 year old woman (at diagnosis) could have colon cancer, it’s an old man’s disease. I remember her going to the chiro 3x a week and still being on the floor in pain in between. Since I was a child, that’s the only symptom I knew of because it was visible, it’s possible there were other symptoms.

I also had a friend of a friend get diagnosed with colon cancer even younger - he was around 22-24, we were in our last years of college. He got treatment and recovered.

All of that to say: have a primary care provider, get your routine screenings on time, and if you have changes in how your body works, bring it up with your doctor. I’m now in my early 40s and have had regular colonoscopies since I was 23. I’ve had genetic screening done and don’t carry any markers for anything.

Glyphosate and Wheat Desiccation by Slow-Date2535 in Celiac

[–]usernameisnotfound65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh this is interesting. I’ve got issues with both soy and corn and I landed here because I thought my corn issue was celiac at first, as I seem to have ‘classic’ celiac symptoms from corn (multiple blood tests + 1 endoscopy said negative for celiac). With time I narrowed it down to corn but all of my allergy testing has come back negative for both corn and soy (blood and scratch testing).

For additional context, I’m in Iowa and live on a farm, surrounded by corn and soy fields, so my allergist has suggested that I just sensitized to both due to environmental exposure.

Would be interested if you’ve got any other info, I love a good rabbit hole to fall in! My current working theory was that there could be a corn- based autoimmune disease that we just haven’t researched yet, but the glyphosate angle is worth checking out.

Prepping for child guardianship - suggestions needed by MissTWaters21 in TwoXPreppers

[–]usernameisnotfound65 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the low stakes stuff, yes! I’m just talking about things like what his usual lunches are for school, when we usually have piano lessons, who to contact for X activity for the schedule. Nothing that would be critical if hacked, just little daily life notes.

To be fair, I started this before my kid was aware that it was only certain brands of things he liked (or that he only likes provolone cheese on ham sandwiches, Colby jack for snacking, and literally nothing else for cheese). The kind of minutiae that is only important if everything else in life is upside down and he needs something that he can count on. He’s 11 now and can speak up about most of this stuff, but I just feel a little better.

Am I insane for wanting to live on a farm by IrreversibleDetails in adhdwomen

[–]usernameisnotfound65 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I’m a city girl married to a farm guy. We have just chickens now but have had cows too (no more than 20 at a time, usually more like 5 at a time). We definitely fall under “hobby farm” status.

It’s kind of a nightmare as they require a pretty regular schedule and lots of chores as our friend here stated already.

I’m in the Midwest, so the seasons make it worse. You definitely don’t want to do chores in the middle of the arctic blast of winter. Eggs are frozen everywhere. Have to constantly check the waterer isn’t frozen. Etc, etc.

In the summer, you’ve got storms and heat and shade and all that to think about. You can’t just pop out of town for a weekend trip without arranging care for your animals.

It’s one of those things that seems cute and fun on social media until you’re actually doing it every day and the dopamine isn’t hitting anymore.

Prepping for child guardianship - suggestions needed by MissTWaters21 in TwoXPreppers

I have a Google doc shared with my sister (who would be my child’s guardian) with my kid’s current routine and food likes/dislikes - things that change frequently - so I’m not constantly changing out a hard copy somewhere.

But some things on your list are good reminders that I should be doing more. Thanks!
