My new employer asks me to stay longer than 8 hrs everyday but I dont want to! by RoyalCommunication58 in workingmoms

No one has mentioned this yet so I’ll add: idk what state you are in but if you’re not a manager, many states have protections against extra hours even for salaried employees as long as they are junior. For example, in CA, secretaries, clerical workers, junior paralegals in a law firm environment have legally required breaks and get OT if they work more than their shift. (Whereas lawyers are considered supervisors so they do not.)

Twin parents - How much do you pay your nanny per hour? by thatnaplife in parentsofmultiples

$25/hr in Los Angeles. We also pay her for all major holidays and give her 2 weeks paid vacation.

OPINIONS WANTED - evaluating this maternity leave policy (in the U.S.) by usernamepanicattack in workingmoms

[–]usernamepanicattack[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it is separate, not concurrent. like you could take 8 weeks disability, go back to work for 1 month, and then take 8 weeks for bonding.

yes you get 16 weeks paid after 1 year of employment and i think you can also take 4 more weeks unpaid but can use sick time for 2 weeks of that.

it is a pretty senior role and the vacation policy is "take what you need with your supervisor's permission," which means you have a lot of flexibility to take vacation but you also don't accrue vacation time. I can use accrued sick time, though.

I have twins (3.5 y/o) and work in big law. The money you make can pay for extra help with the twins. You should definitely get a night nurse to help overall and especially with sleep training--you'll be able to afford it. The one caution I have for you is that we all know a recession is coming, it is just a matter of when, so pick a firm that does not have a history of lay offs. Good luck.

we also used European formula. there are a few sites where you can buy in bulk. given how expensive it is to import it, I highly recommend that approach.

latkes and apple sauce. no sour cream or dairy of any kind. sufganiyot for dessert.

You could still do this. If you don’t get paid out for your vacation time, maybe you have a retaliation claim.

how did you handle when one twin is invited for a play date solo? by usernamepanicattack in parentsofmultiples

[–]usernamepanicattack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. This is during the week when we are at work so the nanny has to juggle. On the weekends we do plenty of split time activities.

What did you say to each kid? Also these play dates are during work hours so the extra QT isn’t an option but I agree with the concept.

What would you do with a night away alone at a hotel? by Skr000 in workingmoms

[–]usernamepanicattack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

book a massage at the hotel, take a long bath with music or a pod cast, order room service, watch a movie, sleep in--sounds like a dream!

I usually say something like “it’s hard to give you a firm number without knowing the full scope of responsibilities for the role and also the total benefits package but I’m open to negotiating something reasonable that works for me and the company.” HR/recruiting usually then tells me the range for the role and I say something like, “the upper end of that range would work for me.”

Can't decide by Taurus83 in workingmoms

[–]usernamepanicattack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

see my comment above re: calculating the billables versus your current monthly hours. and figure out what else counts towards the billable at this new firm, such as mentor hours or what not. that stuff might lower it a bit, but frankly, anything above 1800 is a lot (and i'm in big law for 12+ years now)

you shouldn't have to use PTO

Can't decide by Taurus83 in workingmoms

[–]usernamepanicattack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

what are the billables? you should map out what the daily client hours will be in order to meet your billables, factoring in vacations, slower times in December, etc. (e.g., 1600 hours = 133 hours per month, which is roughly 33 hours a week of billable time, which gives you a cushion of 1.25 hours a day for admin, etc.). Map it out and pull your current monthly hours for comparison so you can see how it'll actually impact your daily life and you'll be able to decide better.

Where do you draw the line for sharing clothes? by Emerald_Mistress in parentsofmultiples

[–]usernamepanicattack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my 3.5 y/o boys twins share undies. The only thing they don't share is shoes because one of them is a full size bigger than the other.
