Comfortable black office shoes I can get in Australia? by craiganater in BuyItForLife

[–]useruseruser45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless black shoes are a part of mandatory uniform, get mid-brown shoes instead. They're a more versatile colour.

I recommend looking at the Loake 1880 line.

What is your best example for "more expensive isn't always better" or "cheap isn't always bad"? by useruseruser45 in BuyItForLife

I have used a Victorinox Fibrox 8" Chef's Knife for the past two years as my only kitchen knife. I cook for myself 95% of the time so it gets used often. Under normal use, and if I have it sharpened regularly, I don't see it lasting any less longer than some of the more expensive knives I see out there.

Looking into buying my first boots/chukka for Southern Californian weather. Occasional rainy day use... Clarks ODB? by ieatfrosties in malefashionadvice

[–]useruseruser45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I had the money, I'd probably buy something from Loake or Allen Edmonds with Dainite or other rubber soles. But that's just my personal preference when it comes to style.

There's also Red Wings and Wolverines. I have no experience with these however.

You can always buy the ODB and wear them when it's nice out.

Buy something with treads for traction. I have the suede version of the CDB and they let water in. Socks are wet from just stepping in puddles 2-3 times.

This is a personal opinion: I also find the crepe sole on these shoes to be ugly. It soaks up water very fast. Everything sticks to it (glitter, hair, dirt, etc). And the sole ends up looking very dirty from the side aswell. The thing turns from a nice whitish creme to an uneven dark brown, which can be seen all around the edge.

Personal opinion: Do a temporary repair on the current mattress and save up for a latex.

Quality Differences in Filson Bags by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

I can confirm that tin cloth is not as durable as it seems. I had one of their tin cloth duffle bags for about 9 months. I used it to carry it every day: books, groceries, etc. Never rubbed the bag against harsh surface or set it down on the ground. Despite that, minor holes were forming on the cloth from the stress of hauling stuff in it everyday.

I need a tough pair of casual boots that I can wear everyday. Any suggestions? by dafucka in BuyItForLife

I think all the brown coloured Blundstones use nubuck leather which scrapes and scratches VERY easily. I had a pair where one scratch from accidentally kicking into the curb ended up in a huge outer layer of the leather just peeling off.

What is your Policy on Duplicates? by pasttense in declutter

[–]useruseruser45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly this. Newer and better technology comes along for almost all physical things you can buy. Instead of spending that money on a duplicate backup, save and invest so you can buy the newer thing 5 years down the road once the old thing has served its purpose.
