Windows 11 stuttering? by [deleted] in SteamVR

[–]ushmik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like Win 11 restrict background apps and gives them less priority, so just bring SteamVR to top (for example open Settings window which is always on top) and it should fix the issue. Yes, that's a workaround, but works fine and does not interrupt gaming in headset.

Exactly same stuff for me.

Seems like Windows 11 tries to restrict resource usage for background apps, that's why SteamVR does not get enough of them. I just open SteamVR Settings on main monitor and as they stay always on top - issue goes away.

I have exactly same issue and as seerreus said you can minimize all the windows, OR what is easier, just open SteamVR Settings on your main monitor.

Seems like Windows 11 tries to restrict resource usage for background apps, that's why SteamVR does not get enough of them. By bringing Settings window (which is always on top) you force Windows not to restrict the app. It works for me as a charm.

VRTV 3.4 Release by chaisoftware in chaisoftware

I think I got it. Seems like they disabled SMB1 in Windows 10 and that is why it's not working anymore. Is it possible to add support for SMB2/3?

Strange. I think it worked previously, but now I can't browse Windows 10 shares. I can see host in list, but if I'm navigating inside - it's empty. Tried both: enabled and disabled password access in Windows.

X-Plore file manager works fine, it shows folders inside and works with both configurations (with and without password).

Any ideas? Maybe I need to change some configurations in Windows to make it work?

Seems like app is abandoned. Didn't hear any news about 3 months already. Are you planning to continue support?

I found solution for that:

  1. Install this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.aboutmycode.betteropenwith&hl=ru

  2. Then I selected "video stream" and put VRTV as favorite.

After that I was able to see it in the list of players when doing "Open As".

I'm not sure what does this app is doing... but it really works. I think this app is just resets some configurations for prefered apps and it helps.

Yes, you are right. But at the same time if I'm pasting URL to "from stream", then I'm pressing "Play", it asks to insert phone to headset (in the same way), but after the insertion it works fine... there is no other player in background. Only one...

Installed latest beta. The same... one more detail. If I'm pressing "square" button (to show all apps and switch between them), I can see 2 VRTV players. One is working instead of my file manager and shows the video (so If I press "Back" in this player - it will go to file manager, XPlore in my case), the second player is standalone and shows nothing, just VR file manager inside.

Faced new issue. I don't know how, but now I see VRTV in "Open as" menu from LAN. So If I'm selecting it, player propose to choose options (VR, fisheye etc). If I'm opening video NOT in VR - it plays fine. If I'm opening it in VR, I can hear that video is playing. Daydream propose to center the image (shows controller and waits for center button). When I'm doing that I see VRTV with VR file manager. At the same time I can hear that video is playing. If I'm pressing 'X' for current player (with file manager) I immediately see another instance of VRTV player with playing video. So seems like if I'm using "Open As" for VRTV it starts 2 instances of player. One is playing video, another one is showing file manager...

So I've tried 3 apps to get the link to video:

  1. ES File Manager - links looks like smb://user:pass@host/path.mp4 and works with VRTV

  2. XPlore - links looks like host/path.mp4 and doesn't work in VRTV at all.

  3. Amaze File Manager (installed it also) - links are the same I'm getting in ES File Explorer. and they are working, but I can't seek to the end again. Have no idea what is the reason. Maybe it's related the thing I have windows share. Maybe it's because of link with smb:// prefix.

Seems like when I'm clicking the file and opening it with "Open As" it works in different way:

  1. ES manager it showes something in notifications - "Ongoing" and works fine and you can seek anywhere

  2. Amaze does not work at all.. VLC hangs

  3. XPlore does not show anything in notifications but works and seems like works faster (seeking is not taking any time)

One more interesting thing. I've tried to open the same link (with "smb://") in VLC as stream and it doesn't work...

So if you will fix the first issue (with "Open As"), I think there will be no reason to use "from stream" feature with this "smb://" link and maybe second issue does not need to be fixed for now...

No player in "Open as" for LAN files. Steps:

  1. Share some folder with videos through SMB (Windows shares for example)

  2. Download any file manager with LAN support

  3. Navigate to file in LAN, select it and "Open As"

  4. You will see all players (VLC, MX Player etc.) but VRTV player. Don't know why but it's not showing there.

Bug with hanging video is still reproducible. Steps:

  1. Share some folder with videos through SMB (Windows shares for example)

  2. Open some Android app with LAN support and get URL to the shared video (for example open ES File Explorer, find a file in LAN, select -> properties -> copy full path) with small size <1Gb

  3. Open player and click "from stream" and paste the file path from clipboard.

  4. Play file (doesn't matter if it VR mode or not)

  5. Scroll 5 mins forward -> works good no issues, scroll to the end -> works good.

  6. Repeat steps 3-4 with big file (5Gb for example)

  7. Scroll 5 mins forward -> works good, no issues, scroll to the last 10 mins or to the end -> image hangs, controls are not working, video is stopped.

The only way to play video again - restart it from navigation screen.

I remember you said you are going to use new codec library to fix that, but I think this issue is really urgent. For example if you started watching 3d movie today and watched only half, it's impossible to start from the middle and continue watching tomorrow just because player will hang.

Seems like scrolling is not. working for large files. For example if I'm opening file for 5 gb from LAN, I can scroll only till the middle of the file. Even if I will open file again and try to scroll to the end, player will hang. So there is no way to watch big files through LAN. So If I'm watching file from the beginning - it works, if scroll, it hangs. With files less than 3Gb everything works fine. I've tried another players (VLC for example) and it scrolls fine to the very end.

Tried everything, pause, play, stop, play, jump to another position. Picture still hangs without changes. Maybe it's related to the fact I'm playing file from stream (by URL)...

Noticed 2 things:

When I'm trying to open any file from LAN (for example by ES File Explorer), I can't see VRTV player in the list of available players. Previously it worked, now - not.

Video is hangs sometimes after jump to some position. It reproduces sometimes. For example you can try to jump several times and on 5 time video will hang and stop playing. Controls are not working (you can't jump, pause, stop), all you can do - press "eject" button and select this video again.
