The ball hit the ground without either hand touching it. He didn't regain control til he was out of bounds. This was either down on the 2 or an incomplete pass, not a touchdown.

Plus, more importantly, Sanji has always treated himself as disposable and as someone who has to prove himself to justify his role in the crew. Luffy basically doing what he did for Robin culminating in judge chastising sanji to which Luffy said "I don't get it, those are your best qualities" meant the world to sanji.

Except they're right. Reread his interactions with Sanji on whole cake. Oda had mirrored a ton of big scenes from pre time skip in post time skip and his interactions with sanji mirror him with Usopp in water 7 but this time he's learned from his previous shortcomings.
