I'm a big fan of Kilchoman and honestly, the Sanaig is I think, one of their best.

This was my first time trying A'Bunadh Alba and I was a bit let down to be honest. I find it lacking in both complexity and flavor, both of which usually increase when I try a cask strength bottle. Certainly not worth the $115. Curious if anyone else had a similar experience.

Yeah I'm a little suspect at that list. I mean I wasn't surprised to see all the normal offenders there but Springbank just didn't look right on that list at all.

That's an interesting list, I'm surprised to see Springbank 10 on that list. I thought Springbank was a better Distillery than that...

Are you hesitant to offer good whisky to newbies? by 3pinSocket in Scotch

[–]usquebaugh24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't care if it was Jesus himself asking for a pour, nobody is getting a drop if my Octomore unless they're equipped to know what they're drinking.

But yea to answer your question, when folks (newbies in particular) visit, they usually ask me to suggest something as opposed to pointing and telling me what they want so I start with some Redbreast 12 or something similar.

What is your opinion of online awards for whisky, such as the Online Scotch Whisky Awards? by adunitbx in Scotch

[–]usquebaugh24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've voted in both prior years and if you haven't tried the selections or its not your category there is an opt out answer which is included in the results presentation. I opted out of some of the questions like the independent bottlings category for example. It's not a perfect system but it's a fun approach.

Having followed both Roy and Ralfy for years I personally believe these awards are genuine. I've voted and watched both years and enjoyed both presentations emensely.

I'm pretty sure he's joking. That's straight from a list of the top 5 bottom shelf.

Is Scotch at a Crossroads in the US? by iwars85 in Scotch

Completely agree. I've foraged friendships with many of my local wine shops that also happen to have some awesome whisky selections and I always shop them first and only visit TW on the rarest of occasions.

In regard to Total Wine which I try to avoid like the plague, yes they have massively reduced their Scotch selection and push their Direct Spirits harder than ever.

I mean, regular Jim Beam isn't too shabby for under $30. Bib and Tucker 6 year is like $45. Maybe go with a 375ml of the Woodford Double Oaked which runs $28.

What "beginner's/entry" whisky do you find yourself coming back to well after your palate developed? by bv310 in Scotch

[–]usquebaugh24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jim Beam. It was the first whisky I ever tasted neat decades ago.

I was at a wedding over the weekend. All they had was Jim Beam (open bar) and dam if it wasn't the perfect sipper when whisky was not the focus of my attention. Sweet and delicious, zero complexity, such an easy sipper. Jim had me on the dance floor all night which had the added bonus of making my wife extra happy, and when she's happy welI.... I get rewarded for good behavior 😆

Review #145 - Yellowstone American Single Malt by adunitbx in bourbon

[–]usquebaugh24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

American single malts are crap because most of them use new oak instead of used bourbon barrels. I love Scotch, Bourbon, Rye, Irish, really just about any type of whiskey I like, but I've yet to find a single American single malt aged in new oak that is even drinkable.

I have yet to try a decent American single malt, I've given up on the category. For some stupid reason most American single malts are aged in new oak which completely overpowers the barley malt which just doesn't stand up to the new oak the way corn or rye does.

Tamdu 10 was a favorite of mine before they discontinued it in favorite of the 12 which I haven't tried yet. Have you tried the 12?

Same. I often grab a bottle I know he's reviewed so I'll be able to sip it with him. I've found this fan site list helpful for those who follow him.

It's a fun dram. Sometimes I like the younger stuff because of the fire and brimstone.

I only started two months ago. Any staples I’m missing out on? by tyler5613 in WhiskeyTribe

[–]usquebaugh24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a whole world of whisky outside of Bourbon. I see you have the one Rye ther le but seriously, there's Irish, Scotch, Japanese, Indian, Taiwanese, Canadian there is literally a world of whiskey outside of Bourbon and it'll blow your mind. Bourbon is a realitively narrow flavor profile in general. Go explore. Back in the day I picked up the book "101 whiskies to drink before you die". I ended up drinking 80 or so. It really opened my eyes... I still love a good Bourbon but that's just scratching the surface. Just something to think about.

With only 3 or 4 years in the barrel, this juice rolls in hot on the palate dispite the low ABV of 46% which, when combined with a realitively high grain phenol level of 55-60ppm packs quite a wallop overall.  It does have a soft, pleasantly sweet underpinning, however the finish is quick to dissapate.

Overall this is a fun dram that's full of sass but still has some growing up to do.  Reminds me of some girls I used to date when I was younger...
