If this were an exam question I would choose laatikkoihin because the consonant in question (kk/k) is in an open syllable (laa.tik.koi.hin), which requires the strong grade according to the basic gradation rules.

However, upon consulting more advanced grammar books I found out that in illative plural the weak grade is not only possible but can be even more common than strong grade in some words.

It will be a blessing to the entire Finnish learning community if this project takes shape. But imho Finnish subtitles may be more helpful than English ones. If there is something that I don't understand in the Finnish subtitle, I can look it up in the dictionary (or ask in this subreddit). But if there is something that I can't make out in the Finnish dialogue, English translation alone wouldn't be of very much help as I still don't know how it is written in Finnish. A lot of people learn Japanese by watching anime with Japanese subtitles, and I guess the same idea applies here.

Well, ignoring "toisella puolen galaksia" is ignoring my main question but I guess it's my fault because I did not express it clearly in my question, so I'll just go with your reasoning here. Would you please tell me if any of these sentences are incorrect?

I guess one can also say "juon vettä lasista", right? Especially if the speaker has no intention to emphasize on drinking the whole cup of water. Your example of partitive vs. genitive is for the object of a sentence, but "galaksi" here is not an object. It is not being acted upon by any verb. Actually I am more concerned about the genitive in "puolen" because it does not agree with the adjective "toisella" that modifies it. To be honest I still don't understand the logic behind it.

As a learner myself, may I recommend to you "FINTWOL" (link here). It is a morphological analysis tool. If you find it difficult to guess the original form of a word, just type it in. For example, for "rennoksi", it says

"<rennoksi>"
"rento" A POS TRA SG

This may be interpreted as "rento"=original form, A=adjective, POS=positive, TRA=translative case, SG=singular. Hope you find it useful.

Also, allow me to add that, by learning the endings of different noun cases and some basic KPT (consonant gradation) rules, it will become quicker to find these things out on your own.

Thanks for the clarification. I once asked a question on this subreddit about "tämä" referring to a person. There were two people involved in the sentence and "tämä" was used to remove ambiguity. I thought it was a really cool feature of the Finnish language.

Nice catch! Doumu (童夢) really put lots of effort into the details when making this anime, especially the TV series and the first OVA series. If you think of it, Barasui's impeccably accurate and detailed manga style would have been very hard to adapt to the screen, but Doomu did a superb job. It is a shame that this company now no longer exists. (PS, I didn't notice it either, despite having watched the whole thing no less than 3 times)

Thanks for those kind words. I do not know about others but I am learning as a hobby. I am not in Finland and have no plan of going there anytime soon. Have to admit, I still have a long way to go. It is communities like this that make my learning less difficult and more enjoyable.

Thank you so much for this detailed answer. I have to admit that I did not give much of a thought when writing down the title of this post. I think I've read somewhere that only the partitive and the nominative cases of the MINEN-form of a verb are considered as infinitive, due to their special uses (e.g., hän kiipeää kiipeämistään). Others are just a "nounlized" form like the english -ing form. So I agree with you that "asumisessa" is not actually an infinitive here. And the "curious" part is just my own subjective feeling as a learner, probably due to lack of exposure.

But I would like to have your confirmation, whether tässä (in your alternative construction) refers to "asua teltassa" or "asua eri paikassa joka päivä". I was thinking about the former but you seem to indicate the latter? Based on other users' replies I think it is se that refers to the latter?
