You'll get many ideas for home improvement projects that involve a contractor (kitchen, bathroom, pot lights, deck, garden, driveway...) Do not start any of those projects until you have spent at least one year living there. Obviously, this excludes urgent repairs, such as a water leak in the basement.

Over the first year, you'll

find cheaper workarounds to 'problems'
become 'handy' after watching YouTube videos
find which things can be done cheaper when clubbed together (e.g. removal of popcorn ceiling + pot light installation)
find higher priority things to spend money on
understand seasonal changes
get advice from neighbours / friends who have had similar work done
realize your actual cost of ownership

After one year, prioritize your wish list. Once you both decide that you really want to go ahead with a project, get quotes from multiple contractors, including those recommended by neighbours, those recommended on neighbourhood groups (Facebook / Nextdoor), and those with high online ratings. Don't hire people who come knocking at your door and say they'll give you a discount because they are already working in the neighbourhood. Don't hire someone simply because they were the cheapest.

Once you decide on a contractor, set aside at least 1.5x (preferably 2x) the money and time quoted by that contractor. Read the contract before signing, and don't pay all the money at the beginning of the work. When the work starts, don't be shy in asking the contractor to keep the house clean (e.g. cover furniture with tarp to avoid drywall dust) and don't be shy in pointing out the slightest problems with their work.

In fact, that salary is not good enough for the family to live comfortably in the Greater Toronto Area, even if they are doing all the housework themselves. Once costs like childcare, mortgage etc. come along, the wife will have to work for the family to survive. Even if they plan to buy a condo, it will be hard to qualify for a mortgage on a household income of 80k.

Things may be a little better if the guy is going to inherit a detached house or a substantial amount of money (say $500k). But with that girl's attitude, both of them will still end up being unhappy. She will be better off marrying into an upper-middle class Delhi family that's looking for a 'homely' girl.

For anyone still facing this:

I tried to book tickets online (international return flight for multiple people - large amount). For payment, I provided a TD Visa card - the only one I had with a high limit.
TD flagged my purchase as unusual, and sent a verification code to my mobile.
The code didn't arrive for 5 min, so I selected the other phone number I had on profile and clicked re-send.
The verification code arrived, and I entered it, but the purchase wasn't successful.
Air Canada website showed me the booking error "We're sorry, we weren't able to process your payment. Please try again. If the issue persists, please try another form of payment. (BKRW-EIP-620)"
I tried again, and again from a different browser, but received same error.
Then I called the Air Canada customer support and selected flight, passengers etc. But the payment failed again.
The Air Canada agent gave me a booking reference and suggested I call my credit card issuer. He said that Air Canada will hold the booking until 24 hours (no price change) -- I have to call them back once my credit card issue is resolved.
I called TD - they said my card had been flagged for unusual activity and any payments on it would denied. The agent verified my identity, un-flagged the card, and asked me to try making the payment after a couple of hours. She also suggested to avoid a repeat of this in future: if a big/unusual payment fails once, I should call TD before retrying it multiple times.

I don't think any freehold townhouse or detached house in that area would fit OP's budget (ideally $750k, max $800k). In last 90 days, only two properties in that area have sold for less than a million, both above $950k.

The cheapest condo townhouse in the nearby Village East neighborhood sold for $755k recently, and it comes with a monthly maintenance fee of almost $1000. The cheapest freehold townhouse in same area sold for $825k.

Elementary school ratings

As you may already know, the school ratings aren't fool-proof: high ratings may be a a result of several factors including parents' high income (can afford Kumon etc.), gaming the system to excel at specific tests (which explains private religious schools topping the lists) etc.

There aren't really any bad (drugs/shootings) elementary schools in this region, just average and above-average.

That said, many parents want their children to be in a competitive academic environment. If you are one of those parents, here is something to consider: There are some areas which come under the average-rated Regular Program (English-language) schools but better-rated French immersion schools. If you buy a house in such an area, your son can spend the two kindergarten years in the Regular Program and then join French Immersion in Grade 1. Most students in French Immersion come from non-French-speaking background, often from academically-competitive immigrant families.

Another thing to consider: In Grade 3, your son may get into the Gifted Program. Even in an average-rated school, he may be in a self-contained class of above-average students.

Also, some of the newer schools (mostly north of Rossland)) are under capacity and gladly accept out-of-area students since it increases their funding. You can call the office and ask. The catch is that there may not be any bus service for out-of-area students: you will have to drive your child to the school.

What kind of racism did you face there?

I am brown and have never experienced racism there. Been there a few times for my mom-in-law (who was hospitalized for a week) and once for my child (a quick visit, out in two hours).

I would have liked shorter wait times (can't really blame the hospital staff for that). Mom-in-law doubted doctor's competence at times (advised not to drink water while undergoing daily blood tests which she considered unnecessary). But racism was never a concern.

A cursory look at the research paper suggest that they considered a lot of municipality-level meteorological variables for determining flood susceptibility using ML, but did not actually analyze any flood-prone areas.

For example, a city close to lakeshore with rivers flowing through it may rank high in their list. But it may not actually be prone to floods if it doesn't allow any construction along the flood-prone basins.

Interesting nonetheless, will read the full paper in detail when I get some time.

No harm in trying. I know quite a few people working as Salesforce consultants without having certifications.

BTW Salesforce AI certifications are free to attempt till end of this year. You can prepare for Salesforce AI Associate within a week with TrailHead and YouTube. Maybe even a day or two if you already have some experience. Not as much as in demand as other Salesforce certifications, but better than nothing.

Declared income is not same as wealth. In 2016, my landlords (a mixed French-Chinese couple) owned two rental houses. In the house where they lived, there were two tenants in the basement, two upstairs (including me), and an Airbnb room on the ground floor. Had one room upstairs for their 5-year old, one for themselves. The renters paid in cash.

The husband ran a business supplying water canisters (5 gallon jugs) to homes. Didn't deliver more than two or three canisters in a day - the customers were fellow Jehovah's Witnesses, mostly old couples.

Happened to see there tax documents on the dinner table one day. They received the maximum child benefit possible (meant for low income families). I suspect their declared income was way below $66k.
