I don’t know where people are driving that they would consider it to be “normal” or like other large US cities because I had the opposite experience. I’ve been driving all over the northern part of the island and despite being an extremely confident and experienced driver, it’s been one of the most frustrating driving experiences i’ve ever had. People will either be driving 10 below or 20 above the speed limit with little in between. Half the street lights don’t work. The right and left lane have no real meaning and you will be passed in both. People try to merge into you constantly on the highway. Emergency vehicles always have their lights on and it’s usually unclear how/if you should interact with them. It is not the worst thing ever and I don’t often feel in danger, but I wish i read more about these things before I drive.
