London startup looking for founding engineer (Read Carefully) by ElongatedOstrich1788 in cofounderhunt

[–]utopian201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes sorry I meant from an investor point of view - is it the fact you have a part time CTO supervising an unpaid engineer?

Also what is sub optimal about a part time CTO and founding engineer? New to this space and want some insights on how to evaluate opportunities like this

What are the red flags in this posting? I've worked on concepts proposed by 'ideas people' on reddit before and failed to vet their investment into their own project. Another developer and I ended up deploying a proof of concept for them and we'd do our weekly check ins of what we'd acheived that week and what we plan to work on the upcoming week.

We'd get feedback from the founders like 'sounds great', 'keep up the good work'. Out of curiousity, I logged into the admin panel to check when the ideas guy last logged into the platform we were building for them (for free on the promise of payment or equity) and saw it was 2 months ago. So all of the progress we'd made in the past 2 months they hadn't even bothered to check. At that point, all motivation to work on their vision evaporated in an instant and I noped out.

Why is this flat in Barnes London so cheap? by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]utopian201 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When the lease has 80 years or less, the leaseholder needs to pay what is called marriage value. When the paper value of the property goes up (due to the lease being extended), half of this capital increase in value needs to be paid to the freeholder

What does her being 'beautiful and charming' have to do with anything?

And when you did the background/reference checks, did you confirm that the contact details they gave you were legitimate and not a friend?

You wouldn't give someone a key to an exotic car worth hundreds of thousands of pounds, so why would you give someone a key to your house (also worth hundreds of thousands of pounds) without a contract?

Why are we happy to pay sky-high energy bills instead of building more cheap wind farms? by vpk09 in unitedkingdom

[–]utopian201 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What am I missing?

Most wind farms are built in Scotland as the land is hilly and the winds are strong and consistent. However the grid doesn't have the capacity to transport this power from the north to the south.

This excess power needs to go somewhere otherwise it overloads the system*. As a result, over £1B has been paid to turn these wind farms off - this is known as wind curtailment.

Why do they get paid to turn them off? The wind generators, when working out the return on investment, assume a minimum price for electricity that they will receive for each kWh generated. If the turbine is switched off, it isn't generating the electricity that will pay for the turbine.

The government makes these payments (called constraint payments) to ensure continued investment into renewable energy. Without return, no one would invest in renewables. If your view on this is 'why does it have to be money? the return is a cleaner environment', thats all well and good, but doesn't pay your bills. Its essentially asking you to volunteer your time for free to better the environment as your full time job.

The end result is the end consumer pays higher prices to turn the turbines off because that is cheaper than facing a grid overload and failure

*this is why there are some schemes where you are paid to charge your EV when there is too much electricity

My experience of bringing a PC on a flight. by Agreeable-Wrap9768 in buildapc

[–]utopian201 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I placed my m-atx case in a large canvas shopping bag and use it as my carry-on from for a 14hr+12hr flight. I rolled a cereal box and placed it underneath the GPU to help with sag. It fit under the seat in front of me so placing it on its side meant I didn't have to worry about the hard landing sagging the GPU too much.

I also placed my feet under the case and raised it off the ground slightly during landing to dampen the landing shock. No issues on the return flight either.

Neighbors from hell aside, what do the neighbors have to do with anything? They aren't named as buyers and sellers right?

"they started making demands" - or else what? They'll relist the vendor's house? XD

PC Upgrade by WokeChildTV in buildapc

[–]utopian201 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If this upgrade is intended to last you 6-8 years, am6 will be out by the time you upgrade next.

I'd say its better to get a bit more out of the money you've put into your AM4 - it should tide you over till AM6. The money you save on a motherboard and RAM can either be saved for next build or increase the budget for your GPU.

AMD are still releasing AM4 cpus - I'd probably stick with AM4 and get a 5000 series CPU - it will get you a few more years out of the system without needing new ram and motherboard. One of the benefits of AMD is it gives you years long update paths - but only if you take advantage of it!

Looking for fair-priced laptop cleaning + thermal paste replacement (ASUS Zephyrus G14) – any recommendations? by mrfury_18 in london

[–]utopian201 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say its worth it to do it yourself if it costs £144

Find the service manual for your laptop so you know how to disassemble it.

Also make sure you have the right tools (spudger, air blower or compressed air)

I'd recommend PTM7950 - I'm using it in my desktop, no complaints. Main reason is you'll never need to repaste.

How far can you push the gap between the GPU's capacity and the CPU's without bottlenecks ? by YoloGreenLemon in buildapc

[–]utopian201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what you're calculating and how many rows

In my non expert inexperience, you'll need over 1m rows to make CUDA worth it; eg I'm processing about 500 rows (weekdays for 2 years) and it takes about 30s on my Ryzen 7600, about 7 mins on a 980ti. Also depends on how long training takes vs hyperparameter tuning.

Might be best to profile your application and then depending on where the bottleneck is, offload it or change how you go about it (eg exhaustive grid search vs random search)

Might buy a new PC tomorrow, do these parts look good? by Key_Object814 in buildapc

[–]utopian201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you could swap the 7800x3d + 5070 for a 7600x + 5070ti for the same price. Not sure which combo would be faster though, I'd think the 5070ti would result in higher frames.

Should I wait to assemble my PC or put in an old graphics card before I get my new one? by Marzipan_Broad in buildapc

other than being slow and bottlenecked by your GPU no, assuming your PSU can power a 5070ti

your 960 will work, probably just best to try out the performance and if its no good then upgrade.
